Spring creeps in
« on: April 07, 2023, 10:50:52 am »

Making slow and steady progress releasing winter's grip.

I saw these ice bridges while out walking the dog and grabbed some snapshots but decided to return later with waders on to do a better job. It was pretty cold standing in the river (a little side channel of the Gunnison) but I think the perspective was worth it.

Gorgeous light and excellent composition. Getting back with waders was a wise decision.
I can't decide for a favorite but it's close between the first two shots.
Bravo.

Thanks francois! I think the first is my favorite but I have some emotional attachment to it. That took some effort and my feet got really cold! :)

Lovely, each one. And well worth getting cold feet for, I'd say.

That first shot is a cracker..!

Well done Matt and top marks for realising you needed to go back and do the scene justice, by photographing it properly wearing waders.

Not that you're asking for CC, but with the first image, I want to knock the first four icicles off on the left, and shoot with a 70mm or so, the abstract of the teeth in that perfect light. Same thing with the second, I just want to zoom into those "teeth" and take out the distractions of the brush which to me introduce this element of chaos in the forest that sort of takes away from such an epic maw of ice teeth!

Thanks, I'm not but I also don't mind some observations from a trained eye.
I see what you mean about the maw of icicles and I may (probably) have some more framed more like how you envision it. That first shot was at 135mm on a GFX sensor which would translate to about 106mm on full frame. I want to do some more/better edits and maybe revisit the site but it has been pretty warm since then so it may have collapsed since I was there.
