I bought this printer very recently due to the glowing review given it by Mr. Wells. The P900 would replace my now very old (but still very functional) Epson 2200. Still prints beautifully, but getting impossible to find ink for it, so time for upgrade in size and technology. The printer arrives with tons of blue tape on every seam outside (and inside!). Carefully removed all the packing materials, followed the instructions to the letter, put the ink in and hit the setup routine. Immediate grinding noise, print head shaking and then nothing but error message "Packing materials may still be present". Further inspection revealed no packing materials or tape present. Tried again. No joy. Same grinding and print head shaking. I looked inside the mechanism that should move the print head and the thin black belt was so loose it actually fell off the drive wheels. Tried to get it back on but became obvious it had so much slack it would not fit properly on the drive wheels. At this point, I called Epson. Total customer service disaster. Total runaround, even after sending rep picture of the defective belt. Lesson learned and my choice of Amazon to buy from validated that decision as the return was handled quickly and efficiently. A note about build quality of the P900. I found it somewhat flimsy with the two fold down doors (one in front and on the back) would fall open due to poor fit. Pull out paper tray was embarrassingly flimsy. Nothing about this $1300 printer was up to my opinion of Epson. Compared to my 2200 unit, the quality didn't compare. That old printer has worked flawlessly for about 15 years without a burp.
So I'm wondering if the unit Dan Wells was using to test was supplied to him directly from Epson. Or did he buy a unit at random? I've now read so many customer reviews of this P900 from various retailers that indicate quality problems are a bit alarming. This was my experience with current Epson quality. Now to find ink for my 2200.
