How to load a different camera profile in LR than default
« on: December 14, 2021, 10:41:40 am »

Sorry if this has been covered before.

With any DNG raw files, (Leica, DJI), all you have are the Adobe default color profiles to use in LR and ACR.  With other raw converters, it's possible to browse other cameras to try their profiles.  IMO the stock Adobe DNG profiles are less than stellar.

I would like to try for example, the LR/ACR profile for the Panasonic S1R on the Lecia SL2 raw files, or use Sony profiles on the DNG raw from DJI drones.

I have looked for a browse option in both LR and ACR and never found the ability to load anything or pick a different camera.  If there is a way to browse other cameras, that obviously have profiles in LR, (Nikon, Canon, Sony etc.) to try them on these DNG files?

Thanks
Paul

As far as I know that's not possible. I don't think hacking other profiles is that easy either, they're not a simple format like XML.

If you're not happy with the defaults it may be best to try building your own DCP profiles. It's pretty easy, all you need is a colorchecker chart and then there are different software options to build and edit profiles; Adobe's free DNG profile editor is good, X-Rite's own free camera calibration utility does a fair job or you can pay for more sophisticated tools like the Lumariver profile designer. My own preference is the profiles built by QP card, but all the above do a decent job.

The DCP profiles are only going to show for a specific camera and model. IOW, you can't use a profile for camera A on camera B. Can't meaning Adobe will not let you and even if you couldn't it would be a bad idea since these profiles are specific to a sensor and camera.

Actually, I have found the opposite to be true at least for my work.  DJI's 1" sensor from the M2 Pro is using the same sensor all all the Sony RX100 family of cameras.  The Adobe default DNG profiles are terrible IMO, as they are applied to any camera that writes raw as a DNG.  For me this is 2 the DJI drones and Lecia SL2.

Using the Sony profile for the RX100 with DJI raws in C1 gives a much better result for what I want to see from the file.  C1 also starts with a Linear DNG profile (again not very good) on the Leica and DJI files, but you have the option to switch to any camera profile that C1 has in it's library.

The Panasonic S1R and SL2 share the same sensor, so I feel a profile from the S1R would be a better starting place than the default Adobe DNG profiles.

I guess it would not be as big an issue if the Adobe DNG profiles had more life to them, but they only offer Modern, Artistic and Basic, (not counting the B&W).  Just very limiting.

The Adobe default DNG profiles are terrible IMO, as they are applied to any camera that writes raw as a DNG.
They may all have the same name (Adobe Standard) but they differ based on the cameras.
Anyway, I agree with Rhossydd, make your own. Easy, effective, you only need a handful per sensor based on the illuminant.

If you're working with DJI DNGs have a look at DXO Photo Lab. I've been pleasantly surprised at how much better the files from my Mini 2 look after being passed through PL5 with DeepPrime, even at base ISO.

FWIW I also built a custom DCP for the mini 2 which is an improvement on the default, but still room for improvement. I'm waiting for better weather to build better ones.
