the iPad - is it any use for photographers?
« on: August 13, 2021, 08:52:17 am »

Just bought an iPad for myself ; a second hand ipad Pro.

It is the first iPad i bought for myself; years ago i bought one for a 3 year old girl and one for an eleven year old boy.
They both still enjoy it a lot, and learned a lot by playing with it.
The only reason for me to buy it was that I bought a drone and found my iPhone-SE screen a bit too small.

It works well with the drone, so i decided to find out if it was any use to view my photo's from the nikon d850 i have.
the large and beautiful screen makes reviewing a lot easier.

Aargh! No - what a terrible iOS system!- everything that is done so well and easy in OSX is a pain in iOS.

On top of that is the lousy software from Nikon to connect with the iPad  ( Snap bridge);  I never got it to work with my d850.
When i bring my photos with a memorycard to the iPad it takes ages to load and i cannot copy only the jpegs ( i shoot jpeg+ raw).

Maybe it is me...

But when is search iPad in this forum i only get the coffee corner...; yes for reading a newspaper it is OK.

Some use them on set with CaptureOne Pilot for previewing images, others seem to be comfortable with editing images on them while I merely use one for surfing online and casually showing people images. I do not think it's a heavy lifting tool but is a small screen device.

Your expectations around the iPad are a bit much. Yes, SnapBridge and the like are painful, I would recommend grabbing a card reader and directly working against the storage device.

iPad's are great for a lot of things, model contracts, shoot notes, portfolio display, etc.  Wireless tethering is slick, especially the latest models that are powerful enough to do it - remember that the D850 is from 2017.  The latest mirrorless bodies do a much better job.

Yes i think i will stick to the things that work; Camranger works great. Cannot understand why Nikon can make it work on their own hardware...

You can also use the iPad for looking at The Photographers Ephemeris (TPE), a great tool for planning photographs of landscapes, and coordinating sunrises, sunsets, etc.

Add Apple pencil and Affinity Photo, and it will fly through the retouching process. The only thing I dont like there is file management. I take files in batches into the iPad, retouch and transfer back to computer. For most of the image cleanup i use the the healing brush. In Affinity Photo on iPad it works lightning fast and is good quality.

Other than reading this, Facebook and ebay, the only photographic uses I have for an iPad are giving to the customer to review the shots as a slave of a full version of Phocus running on a MacBook Air. I would only edit on a small screen if desperate. I do have some photo apps like TPE and Easy Release.

You can also edit your photos on it and, if you have Lightroom, transfer the edits back and forth to your desktop computer

IOS is a pathetic joke. I always fear that Apple will eventually make it their universal OS, then, after thirty years, I'll have to go Windows.

As said, the iPad is only good for showing a portfolio.

I would not limit my comment to photographers.

I would just say ANYONE who had need to show 'their work'

most definitely could not do better than a 12.9" iPad Pro.

To put this into context; I have ALWAYS hated people showing me 'their work'
on that little @ss cell phone screen. The screen is so small and you are forced to really
invade each others personal space. the 12.9" iPad Pro (I prefer the older one with the HOME button (fingerprint reader)
brings a lot of WOW! to the viewing experience.

For getting work done, I use it exclusively for logging in to VDI (The high-end workstation with the Quadro RTX GPU)

That way, the main machine is ALWAYS with you.

So, for me, it's the worlds BEST Thin Client with a 120htz screen the would wow anyone.

ps. Don't forget to add the SwiftPoint ProPoint mouse, for a REAL mouse experience (when connected to a remote machine) and your favorite Bluetooth keyboard (not necessarily Apple mine is Samsung)

I have used a CamRanger with an iPad for a wireless display solution. I hand the iPad to the art director, and every time I shoot a photo, it pops up on their screen. Very convenient. https://camranger.com

Capture Pilot aslo takes the picture. So, you don't have to touch the Camera.

When I shoot in sections moving the art, not the camera,
I say take a picture, and a teen pushes the button on the iPad screen.
This is great for taking several shots in succession
