Phase One XF and IQ4 camera distance to subject in metadata.
« on: August 02, 2021, 11:04:03 am »

Does the Phase One XF and the IQ4 and its associated lens record distance to subject anywhere in metadata? Doing conservation photography in an art museum and they require this as a standard measurement to be recorded.

Yes, but it depends on the lens. As far as I know, most Schneider Kreuznach Bluering lenses write this in the Exif data. Older Mamiya lenses from the AF area or the standard Phase One lenses don't do it - at least that's the case with the lenses I own.

If you know exactly which lens you want to use, ask Phase One before or write here. If I should own this lens I can then gladly look for you.

Thank you for the answer. Three of the four lenses we use are:
Schneider Kreuznach Macro LS 120mm f/4.0
Schneider Kreuznach LS 40-80mm f/4.0-5.6
Schneider Kreuznach LS 35mm LS f/3.5

How would I go about seeing the info in Exif data. Which software is that viewable. I know it doesnt' show up in Adobe Bridge and we don't use Lightroom.
Thanks Again!

If you are comfortable on a terminal application on your computer, you can use a tool called exiftool (https://exiftool.org). At the command line, you would go to the directory where the image is and type:

exiftool <whatever the image name is>. It spits out the data to the screen and I believe the attribute is "Subject Distance" for the blue ring lenses. It's not displayed in most graphical metadata tools I've used including in Capture One that I am aware. Here is an example from one of my images on a 45mm BR lens. I've filtered everything else out:

exiftool P0000937.IIQ | grep Subject
Subject Distance                : 39.163 m

Hello David,

SK BR 35

SK BR 120

Read out EXIFTOOL with Windows GUI. I don't have the LS 40-80mm f/4.0-5.6 and can't give any information about it.

I hope it helps you...

Greetings Gerd
