Moonrise on the coast
« on: July 30, 2021, 04:51:18 am »

It's been a while since I have posted, but the occasions to go out and shoot have been scarce. Finally, about a week ago, I had the chance to spend a weekend in my small house in the Alentejo coast; so I went out on the eve of the full moon a favorite location of mine, Cabo Sardão. It was great just to be out again.

I wrote a small essay here:

Regards and stay safe.

The best time for moonrises is when the sunset and moonrise times are very close to each other. That way, there is still some light in the sky. The darker the sky, the more moon will be like a white spot. Also, it is best to catch it right above the horizon, or slightly after that, as it looks bigger and has some color. High in the sky, and again it will be just a white spot.

Yes, that is why I chose to shoot on the 23rd of July, one day before the full moon. Moonrise that day was at 20.57 local time, and sunset was at 20.55 local time. The shots were made looking east, and I waited until the moon was visible next to the lit lighthouse. Not sure what the goal of your comment was, but thanks, I am aware of what you mention.

To point out that you ended up with a white spot.

It's actually more on the yellow side. On the 3rd shot above, it is a 20 second exposure, shot with the Fuji 14mm lens, which is a challenging exposure. Still, there is detail left in the moon.

The other moon shot in the blog post was taken with the Fuji 35mm lens, so the exposure is not as long, but a few seconds. And the moon is ok to me. I am attaching to this post.

Thanks for the comments anyway.

Holds more detail, at least at the posted resolution. I prefer the last one for that reason.
