New Leica lens
« on: March 04, 2021, 11:04:06 am »

They have announced a new 35mm f/2 lens. Big whoop, you say? So what? Yet another 35mm f/2.

It costs $8,200.

That's not a typo.

Yes, it's US dollars.

No, I am not buying one!

Either get that one or a Sony a1 and an excellent 35mm f1.8 + some change.

As a result you will get highly detailed perfectly focused images in any situation in full silence with the Sony... or a Leica lens without a camera and the awareness that even if you had a camera most of your photographs would hardly have more information in them than an iphone image due to missed focus.

It’s a tough choice...

Joke aside, I am sure that the rendering of the Leica is exquisite and on an SL2 you’ll even be able to focus it manually pretty accurately. The best camera to use it on though remains the a1 using an AF adapter.

Cheers,
Bernard

My early 1960s LTM 35mm Canon rangefinder lens with an adapter, the "Japanese Summicron" looks pretty good on my Z 6 with an adaptor and I'd guess that it would be quite adequate on a Z 7. My old Summicron 35mm from the late 1950s even makes pretty good images if you aren't shooting into the sun. Both lenses lack modern coatings and flare like mad. Considering they were designed and made by hand sixty-plus years ago neither is a slacker when it comes to oozing detail and sharpness!

Both had been stashed away for years and now that a cheap adapter makes them useable on a Nikon Z... Best of all, those $$$ saved will go a long way to create opportunity (travel) to use these old gems.

I’m sure it will be stunning. Well done to those that can afford and enjoy it. Not for me of course. I can neither afford it nor justify it as a business decision.

Who is surprised by Leica pricing?

The majority of photographers will prefer other (less expensive) offerings.
Leica fans will go for this lens.

Certainly.

But I think there is a valid debate about objects being alive or death. And I feel that an object is only alive when it’s used for its intended purpose. I am not sure that the gentlemen who will be buying this lens will be using it much. I hope i am wrong.

Cheers,
Bernard

Off topic, but do I sense some kind of dried out gear enthusiasm here of late? Not one thread about Sony α1. 5 years ago half of the regulars would have been all over the news and the camera and queuing up to get one (not mentioning any names).

Sadly, if it's enthusiasm and footfall you seek here on LuLa then you'll need to head to the political threads.

Maybe the pandemic has people thinking about more important things in life than upgrading one's camera gear again.

It’s a bling.

P.S. What is Sony a1?
