I can remember buying a Nikon d3x for that money in 2009. It was the first 24MP DSLR.
It had an excellent 160 asa but over 400asa became too noisy. no video, no liveview, no stabilizer.
Digital has come a long way!
Phase One will not be happy as will some folks that just bought the original GFX100.
The formfactor of this GFX100s is much better and will serve better as a rotating digital back on Cambo etc..
I would say the pixel race is over - now we can focus on other stuff.
That brings me to the question; How good are the  GF optics? compared to Hasselblad and Scheider Phase one?
and quality control wise.

Having gotten the GFX100 a few months ago, I'm not happy about this price drop.  Would have been much happier at the $7,500-$8k level, but oh well.  I really want to know what pre-sale numbers are like - part of the $6k is about undercutting the Sony camera, but they didn't have to.  It leaves no room for discounts for a while.

I've had good experiences with the GF glass so far, and the 17mm Venus is just a fun lens. Planning to play with a supertele Canon lens soon - because I want to push the limit.

GF glass is excellent but not great I find. Still, they are fine with 102mp and are totally suitable for demanding applications of course.

The best P1 Schneider lenses are significantly better and so are a majority of Z lenses.

I find the S 85mm f1.8 in particular more appealing than the Fuji 110mm f2.0 for example.

The Fuji 23mm, 32-64mm, 45mm, 120 macro (probably the sharpest, this one is clearly P1 level) and 250mm are my favorite.

I don’t have experience with X1D lenses but various elements lead me to think they are overall better than G glass. G glass has many zooms though that increase significantly flexibility though.

Cheers,
Bernard

Yup. Now it's a matter of bringing prices down and shrinking the size as much as possible.

Jeremy, please forgive the lack of description of the link below, but to do so would kind of ruin the point. GFX 100S related.

Forgiven. It's quite amusing. Kevin had a link to it on his site.

I read at some places ( Jim Kasson and Diglloyd) about PDAF banding with this 102MP sensor.
Is that a real world problem or more academical?

Yet to see it within the use of the GFX100 in my photography. Even with a 3 to 3.5 stop push.

I am sure based on the posts it can be reproduced but IMO not in practical photographic use.

Same here, not a real issue in my book.

Really hope that the same CMOS sensor can be used on digital backs ASAP!

The problem is real, but it has not bothered many. The consequence is that it makes no sense to shoot in 16-bit mode.
I have not seen any of my GFX100 files spoiled by banding ... yet. It does bother me a bit knowing that it is there.

It’s not an issue showing up with all cameras equiped with on sensor AF so need to check if it’s still there on the 100s.

It used to be visible in extreme situations on the Z7 but has been corrected on the Z7II.

Bernard

The whole banding issue may have been resolved by Fuji with one of the firmware updates for the GFX100. Fuji rumors reported on this a few days ago. He is very tight with Fuji and most of not of his rumors tend to be fact.

Oh no ... that could be terrible news for my wallet!  I downloaded the original GFX100 files from DPR and worked them over some time ago and felt there was a chance I'd see banding in post on some of my work.  I could have rented to test real world but never got around to it.
So hearing that Fuji may have taken care of this on both versions is something I'll need to look at again once raws are available.

I do not think that the banding fix for GFX100 has been implemented yet. At least, Jim Kasson is not aware of it.

Either way I never found the issue to be an issue. It only seemed to show up when the files were pushed past 3.5 stops of exposure. I tested this quite a while on my GFX100 and never could see the banding even in areas of sky where it seemed to be the most easily found. As I never plan to push a file that far since bracketing is so easy on the GFX100 I quit looking or testing for the issue.

Ir will be interesting to see what all the testing of the 100s shows on this issue.

I agree that it is seldom an issue, at least I have never encountered it in my GFX100 images.
First reports (artificially underexposed images) indicate that GFX100s does not have banding.
