Did social media cause the recent British riots? This is kind of a chilling analysis https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/article/2024/aug/18/inciting-rioters-in-britain-was-a-test-run-for-elon-musk-just-see-what-he-plans-for-america.
I've never quite understood why we give power to people just because they're rich.

So, if an average Canadian can have 12 guns, it is not so unbelievable that many Americans have way more than a single firearm.

Absolutely and they all love getting the money from those sales, praying to NRA that it never stops!

Great analysis of Trump's 'meltdown' at his "press conference" Thursday:
Quote
Trump’s team did their best for him on Thursday. Someone went to a local supermarket and stocked up on groceries, including Cheerios, tubs of coffee and ketchup, and provided Trump with charts showing the high cost of goods in the Biden era.
As his remarks stretched into a second hour, a squadron of flies assembled, likely attracted by several packs of breakfast sausages sweating in the summer heat. The bizarre spectacle only heightened the incongruity of using Trump’s private golf club as the backdrop for an event meant to illustrate the pain faced by millions of Americans at grocery checkouts.

Shares of former President Donald Trump’s social media company on Monday touched their lowest price since they began public trading on the Nasdaq nearly five months ago after a merger.
Trump Media, the company that owns the Republican presidential nominee’s preferred social messaging platform Truth Social, traded below $22.40 per share before noon ET, a nearly 3% decline on the day.
The previous low point for the stock, which trades under the DJT ticker, was in mid-April when the price plummeted to $22.55 following the company’s slingshot rise in its frenzied public trading debut.

Meanwhile, today, the Dow is approaching 41K. The record is 41,595.

Quote
Until now, Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster has held his fire about his stint in the Trump White House. McMaster served with distinction in key American conflicts of the past decades: the Gulf War, the Iraq War, and the Afghan War, but as McMaster recounts in his new book, “At War with Ourselves: My Tour of Duty in the Trump White House,” in some ways, his most challenging tour as a soldier was his last one: serving as the national security adviser to a notoriously mercurial president.

In his blistering, insightful account of his time in the Trump White House, McMaster describes meetings in the Oval Office as “exercises in competitive sycophancy” during which Trump’s advisers would flatter the president by saying stuff like, “Your instincts are always right” or, “No one has ever been treated so badly by the press.” Meanwhile, Trump would say “outlandish” things like, “Why don’t we just bomb the drugs?” in Mexico or, “Why don’t we take out the whole North Korean Army during one of their parades?”

A fine mixture of photography, art (drawing) and political thought.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gO6lG_qL3v8

Though America-centric, I think the piece applies just as much to the British psyche - especially as demonstrated in recent years.

I suppose that different people will take from it as they choose, but to me, it seems that it confirms a suspicion that I have long held: I think it confirms I represent the world in microcosm; it, as am I, appear fated to repeat the same basic mistakes time after time after time. I seriously doubt that we ever really manage to overcome our underlying nature to eventually become, chrysalis-like, the finely honed creatures we perhaps aspire to be. There are more feet of clay in motion at any one time than feet of any other kind.

Has anyone read word-for-word Trump's response to being asked what he would do about the high cost of child care? It's a doozy even for him!

Why do people expect child care to be cheap?

Trump's public statements sound increasingly incoherent, but I don't think he ever was very coherent to begin with. It's all repeat and remix these days, and it's not as if he has ever been driven by a consistent set of ideas. The guy is old, repetitive, and was never very bright. The only reason he became a celebrity was because he was loud and brash, which is highly regarded in US popular culture, at least for rich white guys. The child care statement is just the latest example. He has no real opinion on child care, he has no opinion on anything. Why would Trump care about the cost of child care.

The latest is that he seems to think that there is a risk of children being forced to undergo gender change surgery in schools. Of course he doesn't really believe that, nor do his supporters, not the sane ones anyway. Outlandish hyperbole is his schtick and he's a one-trick pony. He was never a leader in any sense. Would you climb out of the foxhole to attack on orders from a twerp like him.

There were two major shooting incidents in the news this week, but at least yesterday's didn't take place in a school. It happened on an interstate, which is almost understandable in an insane way. Sitting in cars commuting on busy highways is a lousy way to live, we just think it's normal, so I can see where it might affect people in a bad way.

I saw a funny comment online this week, I'll paraphrase, 'Imagine the outcry if Harris had 5 kids from three different husbands.'

I saw that Trump wants to appoint Musk to some government job so he can make the civil service more efficient. What could go wrong.

Two comments,

Re "sitting in cars commuting on busy highways....". I just returned from a 10 day drive to/from Vancouver BC/Denver Co, with side trips through Yellowstone National Park and other places. By far, the worst traffic I encountered was in Yellowstone. Sitting in multiple loooong lines of traffic, waiting for some goofs who park in the middle of the road and exit their vehicles to get close to an elk...... Holy jeez.

And, many posts here are all about harpooning Trump (and I agree, he is an idiot) but in my opinion he is just taking good advantage of a situation. It is the morons who are part of his cult who should be blasted. Without them, he would be nothing. But that ain't gonna happen....

Wrt to tourism in National Parks, I recently saw a couple of articles (on the CBC news web site, I think) about possible restrictions in Banff and other parks. At peak periods they are overwhelmed. I read something in the spring about not allowing private cars onto the Moraine Lake road near Banff because of traffic grid lock. They might have arranged bus transport from a staging area so they can limit the number of visitors allowed in at any one time during the summer peak.

If you want to depress yourself, go down a youtube rabbit hole of videos of tourists getting close to wild animals.

In my prime working years, I commuted daily on Toronto highways.

I believe Moraine Lake has had private vehicle restrictions for a few years now (if it's the one I am thinking of - about 10k of dirt road and Lodge at the lake) and public access is by shuttle only. Other parks - Grand Canyon, Zion to name a couple, have also had shuttle-only access (only part of the south rim of GC) for years. I think it is the way of the future.

Last year, we were driving through the Tetons and a group of cars were stopped for a grizzly beside the road, with people out to see it better. Most kept their distance, but as the bear crossed from one side of the road to the other, one of the driver's exited his vehicle and walked towards the bear, standing about three feet from it as it passed, to get a cell phone photo. Once the bear disappeared, I drove up beside him and told him what I thought of him (it was neither positive nor polite).

And, although not the same as Toronto, I commuted through the greater Vancouver area for about 30 years. Most days were 45 - 90 minutes, with the worst day, leaving work at 7 pm and arriving home at 11:30 (we don't do snow very well).

The Editorial Board of The Philadelphia Inquirer recently published some recommended debate questions "to hold Trump accountable."

www.inquirer.com/opinion/editorials/debate-philadelphia-trump-harris-questions  (subscription site)

• Federal investigators received classified intelligence that suggested the president of Egypt gave you a $10 million 'cash bribe,' but your attorney general blocked the probe, accordingto the Washington Post. Democrats on the House Oversight Committee last week asked you to provide the funding source of a $10 million donation you gave your campaign around the same time and how it was repaid. Will you make that documentation public?

• You have flip-flopped your position on abortion over the years, including saying you were 'very pro-choice' and later claiming women who get abortions should be punished. Last month, you gave two different answers within 24 hours regarding Florida’s six-week abortion ban. Can you clarify your position and whether you support a national abortion ban?

• You called for prosecuting President Joe Biden, executing your former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Mark Milley, and jailing former Rep. Liz Cheney. If elected, will you follow through on any of these threats or go after other political enemies?

• You use faulty claims to criticize Biden and Harris for not doing more about the border. But you worked to kill a bipartisan bill Biden and Harris supported that included the toughest immigration reforms ever. So, is your stance on immigration aimed at scoring political points or finding real solutions?

• You have criticized Biden’s efforts to negotiate a cease-fire regarding Israel’s war in Gaza. But the Wall Street Journal said you don’t have a plan. What would you do differently than Biden? And did you urge Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to delay a cease-fire deal until after the election?

• You claim to 'know nothing' about Project 2025, yet you support initiatives in the plan to fire thousands of federal civil service workers, curtail the U.S. Justice Department’s independence, and abolish the U.S. Education Department. So, how does your position differ from these same plans spelled out in Project 2025?

• If Harris is as radical as you claim, why would more than 200 Republicans who previously worked for former President George W. Bush, the late Sen. John McCain, or Sen. Mitt Romney endorse her?

• Why are so many of your own cabinet members not endorsing you, including former Vice President Mike Pence, former Defense Secretary Mark Esper, and former national security adviser John Bolton?

• Your campaign centers on criticizing your opponent and blaming others. Can you give some specific details — and not just slogans — as to how you will improve the country?

• You boasted that you “did nothing” about guns while you were president. Indeed, gun violence spiked during your tenure. Have the frequent school shootings, mass killings, or the assassination attempt on your life caused you to rethink your position on gun safety?

• You constantly criticize Biden’s economic policies. Yet, he added more jobs during his term than you did — even after excluding the losses during the pandemic. The stock market has reached record levels under Biden, and economists predict your tariffs and other policies will lead to higher prices, increased inflation, and possibly a recession. Even Goldman Sachs expects better economic growth if Harris wins. How will your economic plans help people?

• You watched the insurrection unfold on TV for hours and did nothing. Do you wish you had done more to quell the violent attack at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021?

• Why do you continue to bow down to Russia even as it commits war crimes in Ukraine? Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said you told him you plan to cut off aid to Ukraine if elected. Is that true?

• If elected, will you withdraw the United States from NATO and again abandon the Paris Agreement?

• During your first term, you left the country the most divided since the Civil War. Do you have any specific plans to unite the nation?

• You never take responsibility. Any time you get investigated, indicted, impeached, convicted, accused of sexual harassment, or faced a civil judgment, you claim it is fake news, a hoax, or blame someone else. Have you ever owned up to a mistake or apologized for a failure?

The first time we visited Victoria, for fun I asked the B&B owner if he owned a snow shovel. He laughed and said no.

All very good questions, but don't hold your breath awaiting answers.

I used to take part in a Scottish newspaper forum. When the little matter of Brexit happened, I repeatedly asked the pro-Brexit readership to inform me of a single thing that any one of them could do after Brexit that had been impossible for them to do before Brexit. Not a one replied. I eventually gave up taking part in discussions there - or even looking at the newspaper anymore.

That's the trouble with so much of the public space for debate: you don't encounter debate, you encounter the repeating of entrenched positions and, otherwise, silence. One ends up getting more reward from watching old cop series on the Internet.

An old friend in Oz once told me that in his view, the Internet had been the greatest lost opportunity for discourse that this world has ever known.

Indeed:
GOP vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance (Ohio) on Monday amplified a false claim that Haitian immigrants are abducting and eating pets in Springfield, Ohio, despite the city’s police department denying any such incidents.
