Harvest Moon
« on: October 02, 2020, 11:49:15 am »

I've got a moonrise habit. It gets me out to shoot and it's fun and challenging to try and line it up with various landscape elements.
So I chased the moon the other night and lined it up with this nice aspen grove.
I shot with two systems but missed focus on the medium format one (d'oh!) so those shots didn't make the cut. But my other camera (full frame with auto focus) managed ok. Glad I brought both!

Gorgeous!  Specially the top one.

Does Harvest Moon get yellowish tone like this?

Thank you!
The moon always looks more yellow (or orange) when it is closer to the horizon due to its light passing through more atmosphere and particulates to reach us.
This year the smoke in the air seems to keep it looking colorful as it gets higher in the sky too.

The second one for me, with the lovely glow on the foreground.

Love them both… As Rajan wrote, the second one has a nice glow but I find the moon to be a bit too yellow (it might be my monitor, though). The first one lacks the glow but I find the moon more pleasing.

I was well worth going out to get that kind of results. Bravo!

Matt, both are lovely.
I do find the first one more pleasing, the second might be too much velvia!

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for all the comments!
The second one is a HDR (done in Lightroom) which tends to exaggerate things at times. I try to be sparing with it but that is most likely the cause of the "extra-ness" of the image. :)

The first one was early enough the dynamic range was manageable with a single exposure. I think I prefer that one and certainly prefer single exposures when that is enough.

I like both of them and wonder if some sort of compromise is possible. Down here in AZ, the moon peeking over the mountains would be a bit orange from the smoke in the atmosphere. But I do like the more saturated tones of the second. Just a thought. Both lovely.
