Hey, hey, hey... proud owner of the Canon RF 70-200/2.8

Sorry for the overly enthusiastic title, couldn't help it ;)

Rather hefty, but really balances well in hand, due to its girth.

For the time being, just a size comparison:

1. Against 135/2.0 (with RF adapter)

2. Against 70-200/4.0 IS (with RF adapter, the new zoom fully extended)

Been interested in this lens since it was announced. The fact that it only takes up one 'slot' in a camera backpack, as opposed to lying on its side and taking up two slots, is a big deal for those of us for whom 70-200mm isn't our main lens, but just one of many.

I'm interested in its IQ, though - specifically, comparisons with other lenses in the same category:
1. Against the class leader - Nikon 70-200 f/2.8E
2. Against Canon's SLR version - EF 70-20 f/2.8 III
3. Against the other compact option - Tamron 70-180 f/2.8

... I'm interested in its IQ, though...

While I can't compare it against those three lenses (I do not have them), I can show you the IQ that blew my mind on the first day of going out with it.

So I went to have lunch outside... saw a nice-looking girl in a cafe next to the restaurant. Took a few shots of her candidly (I did approach her later and sent her pics via email; she was delighted). All 200mm, at 2.8:

In the first picture, she had her head down, face covered by her hair... since the camera was set to eye focus, it started looking for alternative focus points... then she suddenly lifted up her head and turned around... the camera instantly jumped to the eye and I clicked.

To give you an idea of the distance I was shooting from, I am attaching the full frame too.

And the last example.

Just look how crisp are eyelashes and eyebrows at that distance in all three examples! And the beautiful Canon skin color in the shade!

Sorry if I am smothering you with my enthusiasm… new toy, you know :)

Were these on the R5?

How's the corner sharpness? Particularly when stopped down to f/5.6-f/8.

It was the R.

Have not tested it yet for corner sharpness.

Actually, I do have one tourist snapshot, done at f/8.0, sharpened in LR with the default Scenic setting. This is a 2x (200%) screenshot from my 5K Mac (the screenshot is 2052px wide, in case your browser enlarges it differently):

EDIT: The focusing point was in the center, so not sure what impact the DOF would have in the corners, as they were obviously not on the same plane

What i have seen with the nikon 70-200 f2.8 zooms is that corner sharpness is most critical. Central sharpness is usually very good. They are made for stage photography, sports and portraits, not so much for architecture...

Congrats on the lens Slobodan! Images seem very good. Less space is a nice feature. Just be careful not to drop it when it’s extended. ;)

Regarding the S and corner sharpness, here is a quote from review recently published at Digital Camera world: « Throughout most of the zoom range, levels of sharpness are absolutely stunning, right across the entire image frame and into the extreme corners, even when shooting wide-open at f/2.8. The only noticeable drop-off is in the 150-200mm sector of the zoom range, where corner-sharpness becomes ‘merely’ excellent. ». This echoes my experience with it.

https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/reviews/nikon-z-70-200mm-f28-vr-s-review#section-performance

Now it’s true that such a high level of corner sharpness may not be required for some of the applications of such lenses, but it’s nonetheless good to have. The best thing being that the performance is affected very little when mounting the x1.4 TC. This opens really interesting options.

Cheers,
Bernard

Which TC would that be? Earlier reports lamented that the two new RF teleconverters (1.4x and 2x) are NOT compatible with the 70-200/2.8 RF.

P.S. Just noticed you are making a reference to a Nikon lens!?

Yes, sorry forget it, I was replying to Peter.

DPR did a comparison of four 70-200 f/2.8 zooms.

Spoiler: The Canon RF 70-200 f/2.8 came out ahead overall.

Not on image quality though.
