Anyone had a chance to compare this new Photographique II to the old Photographique paper?

I will be ordering some in the next few days and I still have some of the original in both roll and sheet.

Tried ordering some from my usual vendor, IT Supplies, and all sheet sizes were back-ordered. I didn't try anywhere else so don't know if this is a general problem or not.

With the Red River replacement for San Gabriel 2.0 delayed by the virus, I'd not be surprised if the Canson replacement for their baryta paper is delayed too...

Rag or baryta?

Jan,

It’s a version “II” of their Baryta Photographique.  I’ve had some on order since announced, but it is delayed:

Then I know the paper, I had a test roll in December last year. I like the paper, compared to the old version its surface is slightly textured, it’s surface has a different and a bit more sheen, a more continuous sheen, it’s white point quite nicely white. Blacks a bit more black, gamut equal .

It is produced by Schoeller, and labeled by Canson, Innova etc.

I create my own profiles, so I do not have any experience about the Canson profiles.

B&H may wait to receive inventory from the manufacturer before shipping.  We can get it directly from Canson's locations (version II only in their MA warehouse at the moment), but it is available to ship now.

Here is a rough comparison photo. Original CIBP on the left, CIBP II on the right. The original has a very uniform texture, like white noise. CIBP II is smother with a bit more gloss, and has some "ripples in spacetime." Like there was an expansion phase at some point.  ::)

CIBP II gives the impression it is whiter, but that may just be the way the specular texture reflects. You can sort of see it in the photo. I don't really know which I like better. Frankly I've moved on, and now use either HFA Baryta Satin or Canson Baryta Prestige. I prefer the HFA. No OBAs and I prefer the texture both front and back. Prestige is very thick, has a wider gamut,* but does still has some brightner content, as do both CIBP 1 and II.

Dave

*I mean compared to the HFA.

It is whiter, actually almost perfect white.

Here are a few more photos, underexposed to highlight the difference. CIBP I left, II right. the last one is zoomed in a bit less than 100%.

The last is particularly interesting. I too am finding v2 to have more of a sheen than v1.

I don't like either as much as I liked Ilford GFS.

I’m sorry to say I don’t like this paper at all, especially compared to others available such as Gold Fibre Gloss and Canson Baryta Prestige.  This stuff looks like someone poured skim-milk over the print.  Nothing at all like the RIP barytas.  It’s the surface that is “the problem” IMO.  Its gamut and dMax are fine.

I agree with you, it has lost something compared to its predecessor, it does dot have this appeal anymore.
