This is simply for the good of the order.

New Z3200 drivers appeared on the HP site in January 2021. One chooses the OS X version and it displays drivers that are theoretically good for that OS. I installed them on my Catalina box and tried a print run.

I got the same errors that I did when attempting to use the last version of drivers on Catalina: "filter failure," mainly. Choosing multiple copies in the print dialog resulted in partial prints and ejected full-sized, unprinted sheets every time. Multiple-page copies of different prints usually crashed as well. One-at-a-time runs seemed to work but I wouldn't trust it. Maybe somebody has gotten the new drivers to work- HP seems to think they're compatible, after all. I can't make it happen on the setup I have but while I'm reasonably competent in troubleshooting Mac issues, a qualified computer specialist I'm not.

I'm giving up on my quest to run my Z3200's from a current Mac OS. I'm now using a Mojave box as a print server and sharing the printers on that platform to my main Catalina workstation. That seems to work flawlessly, so far.

Catalina is a system i will skip...
Big Surprise is another system i will skip.. i stay with Mojave as long as i can: everything works... even my old 32 bits software!

I even have to run 10.6 to use the 'HP Advanced profiling solution'...
Bought it for a lot of money and it stopped working with 10.7- never updated! the colorimeter that came with it ( iOne display 2) stopt after 2 years and serves a s a dongle.
However; i can make very large ICC profiles with it. Works on Z3100 and Z3200 and can do at least 2744 patches...  so it was advanced after all.

I’m about to buy one of those new Apple chip Mac Mini and they now come with Big Sur.

Is there some way to boot up temporarily on a previous OS to run the Z3200?

You know you are living in a legacy world when you are working on files on one computer and printing on another.

I too just ordered an M1 Mini and am waiting on delivery.

I actually called Apple support asking your very question. They said that there was absolutely no way to run an earlier OS X version than the one that the Mac had on it when it was sold. That being the case, while I don't have any personal knowledge of it there may be ways around this- ask your local hacker.

One of the ways I considered going was use Parallels to run Windows in "convergence" mode, so I could send it to the printers using Windows as a print server. This would eliminate the need for a separate physical print server. While there are advantages to that (untried by me but theoretically valid) method like the ability to make full-bleed prints, I'm perfectly okay with keeping an old MacBook Pro running Mojave as a dedicated print server - and that method doesn't require you to bilocate or move files from one Mac to another since the printers are shared from the Mojave computer to the one running the upgraded OS. I figure I've got another few years of life left on my two Z3200s and I should be able to keep this arrangement going for at least that time.

Thanks man. I knew there would be someone ahead.

For security virus protection reasons, I keep my Macs and PCs off of a network,  but what your saying makes total sense. I actually have a good cleaned up Windows 10 pc that’s already set up for the Z3200 and a legacy 8 core mac set up for the Z3100, so I’ll just do big file set ups on the mini and use the ones I have to send to the printers. Not a big deal for me, I’m used to that kind of thing. Not ideal, but perfectly fine.

Legacy Man does sound like a great name for a rock band.
