If you're shooting in smaller formats up to 6x6, you might check out acutance developers like those offered from Photographer's Formulary. I've heard good things about Formulary TFX-2.
However, I might just as well recommend XTol, specifically replenished XTol. Replenishing XTol at home is wildly easy to do. You just develop around 7-10 rolls with stock solution, and then start replenishing at 70ml per roll of 36 or equivalent. Usually people keep a 1-2L solution of seasoned XTol. You use that to process, then when you're finished, pour in the required 'replenisher' which is just fresh XTol, and then fill the remainder with your just used solution. Dump the remaining excess. I keep a 5L floating lid tank of fresh XTol, and a 2L bottle of working seasoned solution.
XTol is a fabulous developer, and it's working at it's best when replenished. You get finer grain and tonality than even 1:1 or stock. It's remarkable.
Now for a film like FP4+ in 120 I do sometimes like Pyro, it's a little better for a film like that. For HP5 however it's XTol all the way.
