My Kidney saga continues
« on: April 19, 2020, 07:53:08 pm »

Some of you may have noticed that I haven't been on the Forum for over a week. Here's why.

About three or more weeks ago I developed diarrhea, which would have kept me inddors even if there were no Pandemic. After lengthy consultations by phone, supplemented with blood tests, the Transplant Team decided I should be admitted to the hospital (Mass General) until they could figure it out.
So I was admitted on Friday, April 10, and placed in a private room on the 22nd floor of the Phillips building, a general care section. They did a whole flock of tests, blood and other, and eventually determined that they couldn't find any non-kidney-related reason for the diarrhea.

I was in that room for three days, and I had a magnificent view over the Charles River toward East Cambridge. Several times I said to myself, "I wish I had a camera here." And on the third day, I finally realized that I did have a camera with me: a cell phone.

So here are two views out my window from the 22nd floor.

After that, they decided to move me to the Transplant department on the sixth floor of Blake, where I had done my initial recovery. I was now in a semi-private-room-turned-private for the duration of the Pandemic. They did another big assortment of tests, and swictched a couple of my meds for ones that might be less effective but with fewer side effects. These seem to be working, and after a couple of diarrhea-free days, they sent me home this past Friday. I now have special exercises to build up strength again, and a visiting nurse will be coming tomorrow (and perhaps on more visits) to check on my progress, So things are again looking up.

The view out the window from the sixth floor of Blake wasn't nearly as classy a landscape as from Phillips 22. But the strange duct work made for some possibly interesting images. Here are four. In the last one, at night, the phone decided to turn on a flash. The result isn't at all what I saw, but maybe it is weirdly interesting?

Great view from your first hospital room, but I suspect you were happy to trade both it and the subsequent one for whatever you are seeing now through your windows at home.  Good luck with your continued recovery following this, hopefully temporary, interruption.

Your account is a sobering reminder―especially appropriate in a time like this when there are frantic efforts to identify antiviral drugs that can be used to treat patients with COVID-19 infections―that almost any medication that is effective may have adverse side effects for some individuals.

Best wishes Eric.

On a related note, when I worked at the Univ. of Rochester hospital the widows in the cardiac unit had a great view of … a cemetery.

Thanks for all the supportive comments, guys.
For me, at least it's not the CoronaVirus.
I just got inspected by the visiting nurse, who says I am doing fine, and my various setbacks are normal.

Best, Eric

6 months report on my Kidney saga
« Reply #16 on: September 14, 2020, 10:49:04 am »

It is now a bit over six months since I received my kidney transplant, and since we found ourselves in the Covid-19 pandemic.

My recovery from the transplant surgery has been going well, and for those who are interested I have just posted a brief report on my recovery on my kidney website http://ericneedsakidney.org/6_months_report.html with a link also to download a pdf file of a more detailed report. If you or someone you know may be anticipating an organ transplant, then I think they might find the long report useful.

Just as I was getting my kidney transplant, a good friend hung my exhibit of photographs at the Brookline, MA, Senior Center. Unfortunately the exhibit has never opened, because of the pandemic. I still have no idea when the Senior Center will open again, but when it does, I expect to schedule an opening reception, and I will send out an announcement.

In the meantime, you can see a preview of the exhibit on my photography website, http://myrvaagnes.com/gexhibit/index.htm.
