What does "Phase One M645" signify?
« on: July 19, 2020, 04:21:09 pm »

I am fortunate to have obtained a legacy HCam B1 technical camera with a sliding back that has "Phase One M645" stamped on the MFDB mounting plate on the rear but am not sure if this means it can be attached to a digital back with a Mamiya AFD mount or not?

Perhaps somebody (with a good memory) may be able to help me identify if a digital back with a Mamiya AFD mount or some other mounting plate may be possible to attach to this "Phase One M645" mount camera?

I expect the connection to the camera to be via cable so it doesn't matter if there is an internal interface - my only concern is to find out which MFDB plate can be physically attached to the camera.

You can get a plate for any back for a couple hundred dollars so i would not worry about getting a back to fit the plate. It is definitely Mamiya but there was the 645AFD but it I suspect it is the earlier model M645. I don't know if the interface is the same. Someone will tell you.

Yes the "M645" is for Mamiya AF/AFD type backs. Same mechanical interface that is on 645AF/AFD/DF/DF+ & XF. Note that some backs may have a different electronic interface with more pins so there should be a groove in the plate that is long enough to clear them. Best is to contact Stefan Steib who's created the HCam. I think he's on this forum.
