ColorStudio came out about the same time as Photoshop. The two competed for awhile. There was for a short time, a similar set of camps for which was superior as we saw with “Nikon vs. Canon”. ColorStudio had CMYK before Photoshop which was one reason some settled on it instead of PS. Ultimately PS became the victor, probably because it was IMHO a bit easier to learn and use. In early 1990 I had the choice and fortunately picked PS and never looked back. There have been products that were said to be Photoshop killers (Xrez, Live Picture), but they died too.

I remember Live Picture, an interesting product at the time.  I must say even though I don't use it much Affinity Photo is a very good product.  And at least for now, not subscription based.

Well i (still )like the program because it is very flexible and starts at the basics ( channels, RGB)
That is why a lot of people can use it for very different needs.
That said there has not been much progress in some areas.
It makes hardly use of the multicore processors even when it is very easy to implement. (for instance at simple batch actions)
Sometimes it uses only one core while i have 10, so 10x slower than needed.
The GPU assistance lead often to problems. ( not well implemented, very old problem -already for many years giving)
Personally i have a problem with the Wacom, painting in masks, layers etc sometimes does not work well. Maybe they adressed it with this release - not sure yet)
( They had a plugin for it but that did not help 100%- it could be an Apple related problem)

The ColorStudio product I’m referring from Letraset died many decades ago.

So that is why Adobe adopted the “CS” naming convention  ;D

PS is still my go to software when the most care is needed. Lightroom for speed and the heavy lifting. Problem I find is LR tends to guide in a certain direction and it results in so many images looking the same. PS for me is still the best to achieve a particular vision. C1 for capture and my personal work before I move the images into PS for final polish.

I find the layers so good in C1 Pro 20 that I hardly ever use PS these days.

Cheers,
Bernard

C1 is indeed incredibly powerful.

I find painting in C1 not very nice... after all it is vector painting.
That is the main difference.. PS works with pixels.

I started in 1993 with PS 2.5 for Windows, long before I found the wonders of the Mac OS.  Combined with an crazy expensive Kodak DCS 200 b/w 1.5mp camera I jumped into the digital world.  It was not until the early 2000's when the Canon 1Ds made its way into my hands that digital went prime time for my commercial work.  I had my hand at shooting the Betterlight 4000 prior to that but it really was not a workable option for my projects.

When did you make the leap?

1990. Used it with a ColorGetter and a Dupont 4Cast.
