Does the A9 have an on/off switch? Was it in the off position?

Why am I not surprised that a fanboy looks at the world with the eyes of a fanboy?

I have already provided feedback on this sentence that must have represented less than 1% of what I wrote.

Your decision to focus on that speaks about you more than it does about me.

For what it’s worth your answer has not been helpful.

Cheers,
Bernard

I completely understand the issue Bernard.  With what you described even if you'd had a 2nd battery you'd have missed the shot as the battery drain was completely unexpected.

He was planning on shooting 50 images, not 1...so a 2nd battery would have saved his bacon.

No, it had accidentally been left in the on position, which I obviously admit is user error.

I find this harder to spot on the Sony mirrorless than on other bodies since there is no top screen, nor any other visible hint that the camera is on besides the on/off switch button itself.

Bernard

Man, you should really re-read yourself before posting this kind of comments.

The level of insecurity you are displaying here is remarkable. How does this story about your favorite camera brand impact you in such a way that you feel an irresistible urge to write such crap is beyond belief.

Please go away from this thread, you are not welcome here.

Cheers,
Bernard

For those interested in a constructive discussion of what happened and how to prevent it, I have started a test.

Leave the camera on with a new battery showing 93%. For the sake of accuracy, there is a lens on (135mm f1.8 GM).

The room temerature is around 20c. The camera is sitting on of a plastic surface that doesn’t feel cold to the hand.

The rear screen turned itself off within 30s.

Let’s see what happens next.

Cheers,
Bernard

Quick report and good news.

After more than 2 hours no drop of battery level observed.

I have no idea whatsoever what happened on Sunday. The equivalent of a 2 hours long half shutter press as a result of bag contact? I may never know.

Thanks for the valuable inputs anyway!

Cheers,
Bernard

Just read this Bernard. It is possible you may have a dying and/or defective battery, so it acts erratically. That is, it may show full charge then an hour later show very low power. Sometimes it would take 20 minutes to one hour or so of being on, not even in use, and the battery indicator would go from full to almost zero. I had three such batteries and disposed of them. Such batteries often charge very quickly or not at all. But this only a possibility. Something to consider.

Hi John,

Thanks. The battery is nearly new but you are making an excellent point. That would fit perfectly with what I have seen.

I have re-charged this battery so I can test with it.

Cheers,
Bernard

Another possible cause could be the eye sensor on the EVF. It can be quite sensitive, if there was any motion in your bag it might have kept the camera from entering the sleep mode. I believe the EVF draws significant power?

Good news.  Did you have IR on or off?  And did you have Auto Off enabled?  Did the camera power down or stay awake?  If it powered down I'd suggest another test with IR on to see what the battery does when the camera doesn't go to sleep.

Test with the suspicious battery ended without obvious problem also.

I’ll continue to investigate, thanks for the additional inputs.
