Why You Shouldn't Use Flushable Wipes
« on: August 22, 2019, 02:02:30 pm »

This article is on the Washington Post website and very interesting:  https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2019/08/20/why-you-probably-shouldnt-flush-flushable-wipes/  We had a back up several years ago when a house guest put one of these wipes down our toilet and it created a mess.  There is a great video linked in the article where he does some actual testing to show what happens to wipes (and some other stuff) when they are flushed.  It's fund to watch and forget about politics for 10 or so minutes.

Absolutely, Alan. On with the thread on wipes! Should be a killer.

I can soooo see you mesmerized by toilet flushing for 10 minutes  ;)

Don't scoff: think of the poor sods without a pot to piss into.

Question: Should photos of the 10-minute flush be posted on Street or Landscape, or do we need a new thread on Real Toilet?   ::)

I think you guys are giving Alan a little too much gripe, although it is a subject matter that does importune for quips.

"Flushable" wipes are actually a pretty serious problem.  We recently had our stack replaced (from being 100 years old) and our plumper actually warned us against using such things.

Since such situations could lead to man-caused floods, the most appropriate section might be the Climate Change.

We need a new category: The Potty Corner.

Here's a real life example of what can happen :-)

I can't believe that Hollywood hasn't made a summer blockbuster about that yet.

This is all very well and laudable, but in practical terms, how would you do your washing up if you had to try and separate cooking fats from the sink as you're doing your dishes and pots etc.? I already wipe those things with kitchen roll before they hit the water, but the paper has to go somewhere too... the residue on the plates, post-wiping, is enough to kill the Fairy Ultra in the basin.

I'm not typically for regulations, but I would okay if these got outlawed.  If you have a septic tank and leach field, I have not problem with you using them, but then you are liable to fix the problem once it arrives.  With public sewers, these should not be allowed.

I think they're mostly talking about emptying the frying pan down the sink - unless your meal is a "Scottish salad" there shouldn't be that much oil left on the plate :-)

Honestly, I doubt that healthy and smart people can flush wipes into the toilet, even if they are positioned as for the toilet. A bunch of stories about it!
