Enough. This thread is generating an enormous amount of heat and almost no light; and personal abuse masquerading as argument has become too prevalent. Until now, my experiment in re-allowing political debate has, I think, been at least moderately successful but recent posts are undermining that view.

I have marked the cards of those whose behaviour has led to this thread's being closed and I will have a substantially lowered threshold for banning them if they overstep the mark again.
