how bad is the HC 35mm?
« on: May 21, 2019, 01:40:56 pm »

I read endless comments about how poor the Hasselblad HC 35mm is compared to the rest of the HC lineup.

I am looking for a wide angle lens for landscapes on my H1 body (and it's the widest lens which that body supports I think)
Is is really a poor lens?
how might that lens perform stopped down? say to f11?

It's not great, but it's not awful. I sold mine, but here's a test of it on a 33x44mm sensor:

HC 35 on GFX

It wouldn't be as good in the corners of a 42x54mm sensor, but I'd guess it would be fine at f/11. Are you going to use film? That's a bit bigger, but film is more forgiving.

I had one for several years. I certainly would not describe it as "poor".
It may not be as good as some of the other lenses.
At the price you can buy them for these days I doubt that you would be disappointed.
I sold mine when I got the X1D and now use my Canon 24TSE.

The HC 35mm lens is widely recognized as the weakest lens in the H series lineup. Ok in the center, but quite poor in the corners, even stopped down. I had one for several years and sold it off. The 24mm and the 28mm HCD lenses are more modern designs and are reputed to be much better, but they are optimized for the 36x48mm digital sensors used in the H3D-39. If you use the HCD lenses with the "full frame" 40x53mm digital sensors, you will suffer some vignetting and degradation of performance at the perimeter of the file. https://hasselblad-com.cdn.prismic.io/hasselblad-com%2F72678dc2-cb76-4fd5-aa5a-8bca7f8901b9_hcd+and+large+sensors.pdf Even with a crop, however, I think the FOV with the 24mm HCD lens will still be wider than the 35mm HC lens.

The HCD24 and HCD28 will only work on an H1 camera when its firmware is upgraded to the latest version. Upgrading the H1 firmware needs an Hasselblad digital back of the era or can be done in service.

The HCD28 will work on film, but without any filters and the extreme corners will be a bit less sharp.

The HC35 is, in my opinion, a fine lens. Corners are a bit soft wide open, but that is rarely a problem in practice. At f/8 everything is sharp. There is a test here:

I have used the HC 35 on a H3dII 39. In my opinion a fine lens. I later traded in for a HCD 28. I also use this lens on a H1 with a film back.
The HCD lenses are designed for digital backs and lens correction profiles. You will not have lens correction when using film, but I do not miss lens correction.

With an LCC and lens correction it's not bad. I used to use it on my Credo 40, but got rid of it when I went full frame. Not sure how it performs on a larger sensor.

If you want 35mm, maybe consider the 35-90. I think it's the sharpest lens in the H lineup.

The 35-90 is HCD - crop sensors only FWIW

I had one with my H1/P25+ combo but recently sold it as Iā€™d bought some GFX kit and had hardly used the 35mm in 10 years. But only because  I rarely have the need for that focal length. I love some of the images of buildings I made with it with LCC and lens corrections in C1. I have no problems with them.

I used mine all the time with my IQ3 which is full frame.
