tethering options for P30+
« on: April 13, 2019, 09:08:43 am »

I used to tether my P30+ to my 2011 macbook pro with C1 via the firewire port

unfortunately a disaster with a pint of beer means my macbook pro is no longer with us, and as such I am stuck without a tethered solution

What options to I have to get C1 and my P30+ back (on a Hassy H1 body) talking to each other again?

I am not married to the Apple ecosystem, so can move away from a macbook if necessary.

I've seen thunderbolt to FW adapters but I think I might struggle with battery life on the camera on longer shoots in the field

any suggestions please?

In a studio environment it's very easy to get a Windows PC with a PCI-e Firewire card that also delivers power to the back.

In the field you're better off just using a thunderbolt-FireWire adapter and relying on multiple batteries to get your through the day. It's not nice, but every other option is even worse, especially when you'd have to carry extra batteries to power FireWire repeaters (apart from the additional weight and cables etc).

I've successfully used a Dell XPS15 (2018) and a Razer Blade 15 (2018) both with Thunderbolt 3 <-> Thunderbolt 2 + Thunderbolt 2 <-> FireWire Adapter chains and both worked very well (after a few tweaks):

However now with current Macbook Pros I have no idea how well such an adapter chain would work. The Thunderbolt 2<->FW Adapter worked fine on my old MacBook Pro (2013)...

This screen shot is from running on a late 2015 15" macbook pro, with blade ssd and stored on the small ssd G drive, which are both very fast.

I loaded C-1 6.4.4, running Yosemite as the system OS and it runs fine on a late 2015 macbook pro, tricked out from Macs4us, though I didn't and don't tether to these two machines as I use either an I-mac, or one of the three 17" late 2011 mbpros i've had fitted with a longer life battery and for start up a 1 tb SSD blade drive, with a secondary drive in the dvd slot, as the 17" not only have a matte screen, but can connect through FW 800 with a 800 to 400 cable, ethernet or usb 2.    I've kept three of the 17" to use on location or studio for tethering and the ssds make a world of difference and gives me 2 tb of storage.  If I need more I use the small 1 or 2 tb ssd G drives and sync them to an identical drive so everything is backed up when I shoot s my p30+ or my Canons.

The 15" from the specialized dealer cost $2,500, the 17" you can buy from a dealer for about $650, plus drives and the extended battery.

My 15" that I show in this screen shot is running Yosemite and 6.4.4 (as I mentioned) but I am sure a dealer like Steve Hendrix or Doug can give you more exact information.

Now I didn't do this screen shot while tethering on the 15" (all of our cameras are packed and ready to go on location tomorrow)  but it does run fine so I am sure it will easily tether a p30+ with the correct cable.

I've also used a huge Dell laptop, but I'm just not a PC person and don't care to switch as we are running 7 active mac stations in our studios with 5 macbook pro's for location work.
