Strange Checkerboard Pattern on Epson 3880 Printsr
« on: April 12, 2019, 12:05:22 pm »

I have some uncompressed Raw Files from an A7RIII which I send to edit in PSCC from LR Classic CC (I have the most recent versions of both running on OSX 14.1).  These have been sent to PS and then I have used the Silver Efex Pro plugin to convert them to B&W.  The conversion is through a custom preset I have created in SFX Pro.  They are then saved in PS as 16bit Tiffs.  Some print perfectly cleanly but some have a strange checkerboard effect on them.  Head Alignment and Nozzle Checks (clear) don't help.  Also printing out of PS produces the same effect as printing out of LR.  Unfortunately I processed all of these before John Beardsworth alerted me to the advantages of opening images as smart objects in PS and then applying SFX Pro as a smart filter, so I can't go back and check  precisely what settings I used in SFX Pro.  But pretty much all of the images had the same custom preset applied and any further tweaks were pretty mild.

I did have a similar problem a few years ago with colour images from an A7II coming out of LR - a similar checkerboard pattern was apparent.  But this was caused by over aggressive increases in colour saturation and contrast in LR  - backing off from these a bit eliminated the problem.  But here there was no aggressive editing of the original Raw files in LR before sending them to PS and thereafter to SFX Pro.  As far as I can see my processing in SFX was not especially dramatic and many of the images with the same custom pre-set print cleanly.

I have found that re-editing the problem files and backing off the processing SFX Pro helps, but I am only backing off from relatively minor processing.

So any idea what is causing this?

I enclose 3 attachments:

The first is a screen shot of part of a problem image from LR - no indication that anything is amiss is visible there or for that matter in PS.  The image is a crop of a man carrying a white textured bag.

The next one is a wonky iPhone shot of part of the same image from a print made on Ilford Gold Fibre Silk at 2880 with Fine Detail  and 16 bit output turned on and High Speed turned off. This shows the pattern which is most obvious on his coat to the left of the white bag.

The last one is another wonky iPhone shot of the same image but printed in exactly the same way as above but after mild re-editing.  No pattern there.

The image is of a man carrying a textured white bag.  The pattern is most discernible on his coat to the left of the white bag.

This is getting frustrating, but does anyone have any suggestions as what is causing this?

Maybe try high quality, not Finest Detail as that may be the reason.  Our color specialist has done many prints with the different settings and found that the Finest Detail may not be the best option since it can have affects to the print (like what you see there) and High Quality is better.  Also, if you have a Superweave option (probably not available on the 3880 series), don't have it selected either.

"Relative" colormetric with "Black Point Compensation" checked if printing from Photoshop.
Hope this helps.
