Mega tank printers from Epson and Canon?

Agreement on the ink price.  You can print without pain.  Imagine!    Twenty cents (USD) per full-bleed letter-size image is great.  These printers actually encourage printing.

At first I thought that too but it seems to me that for printing photos the price of good photo paper dominates the total price per print, so whatever you save on ink is less dramatic (and depending on results, not worth it). For printing on plain paper the L1800 is much cheaper for sure.

With my L805, I print exclusively on Costco glossy photo paper. (Rumoured to be an Ilford derivative) I don’t care. It looks great and prints beautifully and costs twenty cents a sheet.  I tried matte papers and they print well, too, but cost substantially more.

Ink costs play a near zero part in the cost equation, since a complete refill of all six channels costs less than a hundred dollars and prints literally hundreds of full bleed letter size prints.

No information on the L805 here in the US, so I went to the European support site, downloaded the driver, and extracted the icc profiles.  There were 6 for Epson resin coated papers (glossy, lustre, etc.) and 1 matte.  Makes sense, this is not a fine art printer.

Dug inside the resin coated papers icc profiles, appeared to be reasonable quality, good gamuts, black points, curves, etc.  Pretty much on a par with my Canon Pro 100, also a dye ink printer, i.e. probably capable of good quality prints up to letter size.

Two sources available here, ebay at $432 and Newegg at $468.  It's a little bit scary to jump in with no apparent support, too bad it's not available thru B&H, etc.

Fear not.  It's the least needy printer I've ever owned.  The prices have gone up a little since I got mine two years ago, but it's still excellent value.

At the risk of repeating myself, "it encourages printing".

Prowling around the Epson Europe website I came across the L1800, apparently identical to the L805 except A3+ (13x19) capability.  Now that's a printer I could really fall in love with.  However, can't tell if it is "real" or not, no apparent source in the US.

Quick search on Ebay, available for $950 or so from somewhere.
