2017 Imac 27" with 512Gb int hard drive
« on: December 01, 2018, 09:42:51 AM »

i purchased a 2017 27" imac with a 512 GB int SSd drive and find it too small for my needs. Can i set up and run the imac with a 2TB ext SSD drive and get good performance speed. I use the computer for photoshop and lightroom with  50mp camera.

Run your programs of the main SSD and keep your data on an external HDD or SSD. 512GB SSD is plenty for programs.

If you keep nothing but the OS and apps on the 512GB SSD you should be fine.  I too have a 27" iMac with a 512GB SSD with 40GB RAM and have no issues with performance with Lr and PS.  All my photos, downloads, other files, etc. reside on an external redundant array (Drobo).

The internal drive is actually a NVMe, so much faster than a SSD.  Yes, everyone is correct to not store your photos on the local drive, but on an external drive sized accordingly.
