SageThumbs Codec doesn't work for 100MB+ TIFFs
« on: October 12, 2018, 10:21:44 pm »

Without SageThumbs I don't get PSD thumbnails. With it, I don't get TIFF thumbnails if 100MB or more. Any ideas how I can have both?

DON’T use .PSD!

As for this “utility”:

Where to go to get help (if that’s the goal) & and example of why:
https://sourceforge.net/p/sagethumbs/tickets/136/

As Sagethumbs can break Windows why not try Mystic Thumbs which does/should work for even older no longer supported Windows OS.  Not free but not too expensive IMHO

I'm reading your article and it says: "Both TIFF and PSD can contain a maximum of 30,000 pixels." I'm confused.

Confused about what? Don't use .PSD UNLESS you hit the limits and then, you're 'stuck' with PSB.

You say that both TIFF and PSD are limited to 30,000 pixels. Isn't that a typo?

Hi Frans,

Yes, that is not correctly worded.

The limit is something like 32000 pixels in either dimension (width/height), or a maximum file size of 4 GigaBytes.

Cheers,
Bart

It may just be that SageThumbs doesn't have sufficient capability. It is freeware after all.

Yes, max size which can greatly differ based on layers, bit depth or dimensions.
And more important,PSD is a proprietary and unnecessary format.

Photoshop CS6 gives the attached warning, which apparently doesn't apply for TIFFs, if one makes a file with e.g. 70000 pixels length, which saves just fine as a TIFF. Don't know if there even is a maximum as long as the total file size stays below 4 GB.

Cheers,
Bart

When that article was written, CS4 was around, don’t honestly recall what error would pop. But the size limit existed for both. Either way, going back to post #2, there’s nothing useful in .PSD sans Duotone support and as Schewe points out, best to stick with TIFF unless you hit thise size limitations

Thank you guys for your inputs. I'll stick with TIFF's so PSD thumbnails are not an issue and uninstall SageThumbs.
