Pardon the silly question - I shot medium and large format film for 25 years (happy to never touch film again though) and now mostly use the big Canons and Nikons for my wilderness photography work. Is there a medium-format back on the market that does not require a college degree in order to get good files from? Can you process these files in good old ACR and get nice results that are worth the 30-grand price? I would much rather be out shooting then studying manuals and going to schools and tweaking software for weeks on end just to get an acceptable image, and it kind of souds like that is what is required with all of the current backs on the market. Just wondering...

Tim if your current workflow is based on ACR and you're comfortable with it then it's not any different to your DSLR, bar the fact that you'll be handling a medium or large format camera rather than a 35mm....
Put a CF card in, set the iso and White balance and shoot away...that is if you have the cash obviously...

Tim, it's not that bad. ACR itself opens Leaf files very nicely. if you can use ACR then you can also easily use C1 or Raw Developer for Phase.  Also, from what I've seen, what Yair says is true: The backs themselves are easy,you pop in a card and go.


Of course, the choice is still hard. Basically it's like choosing between Nikon and Canon
