Phase One P30+ substitute
« on: June 26, 2018, 07:16:56 am »

Ive been shooting with a Phase One P30+ for several years. It’s a wonderful kit on so many levels. The only thing is, my back (and my wallet) needs a lighter load. I shoot mostly landscape. I also shoot with a Leica M240 and love it. I have no doubt current P1 backs are of unparalleled quality, but so is the price tag. I don’t need 100mp digital back. I want a lighter/smaller kit with a more reasonable price, that also provides equal or better image quality as my P30+. Fuji, Sony, Nikon, Leica SL...? Any ideas? Thanks!!!

Some good options:
- Sony a7rIII
- Nikon D850
- Hasselblad X1D
- Fuji GFX 50s

If leaf shutter lenses are needed, then the Hasselblad is the only game in town meeting compactness and price criteria.

Cheers,
Bernard

Thanks Bernard. The Fuji specs out very nicely. Do you know if GFX50s RAW files will work in Capture One? On the Phase One site, I see many Fuji supported cameras, but not the GFX50s. I find that unusual given it's medium format...

It is not, and will not be. Phase One supports a variety of small format cameras in Capture One but only their own medium format solutions.

Hmm... that’s too bad.

Hmm... that’s too bad.

I started to work with Lightroom when the same problem hit me with my Hasselblad H6D-100c files, and discovered that LR had progressed very significantly these past years.

To the extend that I am wondering whether I will keep using C1 Pro for my D850 files moving forward.

Cheers,
Bernard

It is rumored that Fuji is introducing something lighter and cheaper -a rangefinder-like- based on the 50MP sensor, at Photokina in a couple of months. I wouldn't expect a leaf shutter, obviously, and for lenses it will be the GFX50 range. Also, prices on the Hassy are falling. If you can live with a 35mm system, then all of the cameras on Bernard's list are probably well within striking distance of the P30, except for the famed "MF look" and skin tones.

This is all very helpful. Thanks everyone!
I know it’s not mirrorless, but any thoughts on the Nikon D850? I’ve been looking into this one and it looks very impressive.

Yes, the D850 is a remarkable piece of equipment and is close to best in class in many dimensions which makes it the best all rounder camera ever designed IMHO.

From all I’ve seen online about the D850, I think you might be right :)

Love my D850.  With three Zeiss ZF.2 lenses (21mm,  28mm, and 85mm) it cost about the same as ONE Phase One Blue Ring lens.

So glad to be off the Phase One train.  Updates cost an arm and a kidney.

Indeed. I too am glad to be off the Phase One train. Extraordinary cameras, but just way too much money. I want a good car, but I don't need a Bugatti. I got my first Phase kit back in 2006. Back then, full frame 35mm didn't cut it for my needs. Now, 35mm has come a LONG way. So has medium format. Although even if I could afford it, I don't need 100MP. With the D850, I feel confident that it'll deliver all I need, and more. Plus, upgrading in the future won't be prohibitive.

Question about focus stacking feature on the D850. Will it work with non-Nikon lenses?

As a show of appreciation to all of your advice, I figured I'd post here what I finally settled on. Here's the list:
-Nikon D850
-Sigma ART lenses: 24mm f1.4, 50mm f1.4, 135mm f1.8
-Sigma USB Lens Dock

I've only started to do some casual shooting, so I can't give a thorough review of the kit yet. But so far, I am extremely happy with the setup. I've spent a lot of time learning all of the D850 features, custom settings, etc. I watched a bunch of youtube tutorials and Steve Perry's youtube channel was the clear winner for me. He knows the nikon system inside out, and explains complicated concepts in a very intuitive and clear way. Highly recommended. One thing I was mildly dreading about going from Phase One to Nikon was Nikon's (or Canon) endless menu system. Yes, it is vast and overwhelming. However, Nikon has something really great called "My Menu", where you can create your own little menu with the features you frequently use, so you don't have to search for the feature you need when you need it. I assigned "My Menu" to one of the fn buttons for quick access, and it works brilliantly. Image quality of the D850 -IMO- equals or surpasses the P30+. Color rendering is so good, I barely have to do any adjustments at all in Capture One. The Sigma Art lenses. WOW. Thanks to a few here on LL who mentioned them when I was asking about the Zeiss Milvus as an alternative to the Nikkors! The Sigma Art is a joy to use. IQ is beautiful. Bokeh, sublime. AF, fast, near silent, and accurate. And now... the Sigma USB Dock. I must say, now that I've calibrated my lenses with it, I can't see why any AF user would not use this. I'd rather shoot MF than with a non-calibrated AF lens. Out of the box, my ART lenses focused -apparenlty- very well. After calibration, auto-focused images are razor sharp, precisely where I need them to be. The only downside to the dock is that it took me a while to figure out the calibration process. Sigma has a few instructional videos on youtube, but for someone who is new to calibrating lenses, it lacks instruction (or maybe I'm just not that smart). But once I got the hang of it, the results sliced through my eyeballs like a lightsaber on Tatooine. Highly recommended.
I first acquired the Phase One P30+ kit because at the time (+/- 10 years ago), it was the only camera that would give me the IQ for my subject matter. Now, the P30+ is still a magnificent piece of gear, but much too big, too heavy, not weather sealed, and too expensive to upgrade from. The D850 has the IQ, ergonomics, weather sealed, compact, and won't require a selling a kidney to upgrade. I'm so happy. My only "problem" now is that my camera bags (formally used for my Phase kit) are too big ;)
Thanks again for all your advice!

Glad you like your new kit!

I have just shot 128GB of images with mine this week with the 28mm f1.4, 105mm f1.4 and 300mm f4 PF and was once again amazed by the AF and image quality, starting with colors indeed. ;)

Cheers,
Bernard
