Rodenstock 138mm f6.5 HR Digaron SW FLOAT
« on: September 25, 2018, 01:24:08 pm »

The Rodenstock 138mm f6.5 HR Digaron SW FLOAT is out. Looks like the focus (with floating lens element(s) is built into the lens positioned in front of the e-shutter. f6.5 sounds strange, maybe it’s a typo…

No link. Rodenstock website is still not finished. Info is from the latest newsletter from Linhof Studio. There’s an image in the newsletter but I’m not sure if I’m allowed to show it.

Newsletter from Linhof Studios:

”NEW Rodenstock 138mm f6.5 HR Digaron SW FLOAT

This new lens from Rodenstock sets new standards for the demanding and every changing needs of digital photography.

An exceptionally sharp long focal length lens for adjustable technical cameras intended for a wide distance range from infinity
up to an image scale of 1:5 (β' = -0,2).

It provides negligible distortion (almost always below 1‰) and a total suppression of the chromatic aberration for perfect freedom from colour fringing.”

It may not be a typo. This is a large lens - they wanted a small maximum aperture to help with the size.

Is there an option without e-shutter?
No use for that, just need aperture control, then ES.

Same here, I don’t need any shutter just something to close and make dark frames easier.

I really hate that there currently is no good solution.

Don't know who is going to be buying this lens.  Stratosphere pricing and with the baggage of an E shutter it seems like a studio only lens.  That's a tiny subset within an already tiny market.

Hopefully Alpa will release one with a simpler solution.

I have zero interest in an eShutter for this.

I think this is a huge problem and pretty sad. The newest generation CMOs with their electronic shutter would be perfect for tech cameras and on the other hand it’s getting more and more complicated. I don’t want alpas/sinar/arca shutter with a battery and control unit, it’s just all bulky.

Not sure if we ever see the light of day in that regard.

The lens can be ordered with aperture-ring only and no shutter. As noted by tigers here the primary use case would be to use it with a focal plane shutter or sensor-based electronic shutter (ES).

If in the USA feel free to email me to start the process.

Doug.... does the shutterless version have a Copal 0 mount and spacing?  A picture is worth a thousand words......

Victor

Edit:  Obviously there must be a spacer with the correct thickness to take the place of the shutter or the aperture is the same thickness of the old copal shutter.

I don't know the answer to the question, but here is a picture that Dave sent me today. Also confirms the f/6.5 max aperture.

I've just finished up a Skype call and seen a prototype of a Rodenstock HR lens in the diaphragm/no shutter configuration. It is not quite final, so I cannot reproduce the screen shot I took, but suffice to say there will be something in the fashion of a tube to account for the spacing. I don't have a confirmed filter thread size yet for the 138mm, but it is a large heavy lens. Alpa provides 1.5 kg as the listed weight, and this is probably about 200 g more than the lens without helical mount. Rodestock lists the 90HR-SW as 680 g while Alpa lists it at 880 g.

Thanks Steve. That is more encouraging. I suspect getting a sample of one of these to test out will be tough for a while. It is going to have to be excellent to make up for the mass and to knock off the svelte sk150.

Hi Dave - just got hold of rough iPhone shots of the data sheet. Hopefully legible for everyone. The filter thread is not as large as I expected (67mm), but it does weigh in at 1400 g.

Will you have this lens at Photo East, Steve?
