Dear Nikon users,

As a side note, I bought a few months ago a (pretty expensive) second hand nikkor 58 f1.2 Noct.

Wasting most of my time doing landscape photography, I didn't have much time to play with it until last night when I had the opportunity to attend a Japanese Bon odori (dance festival) in a suburb of Tokyo.

I was just so pleased with this lens in difficult low light situations. It was definitely a bit tricky to manually focus, but the quality of the bokeh on these few sharp images is just gorgious. The images have a Leica feel to them that I have seen in only a few Nikon images.

I would urge any of you doing low light photography to try one of these babies out if you ever have the chance!

Hi Kenneth,

They are in the pipe, I am busy adding some PS lens blur to the images...

Some of the most representative images are of friends and I usually don't post private images on the web though.

Thanks. They're stunning. What was the ambient light like? The flute player picture reminded me of the bokeh I get with my Minolta 85mm 1.8 G - I'm going to have to get back to portraits again.

Ken,

The ambiant light was ranging from OK to terrible depending on the place.

Everything was shot at f1.2 or 1.4, with ISO set at 400. Shutter speeds where kind of perfect to give a sense of movement when it was needed. The most tricky aspect was definitely focus as I hadn't focusses anything manually - but 4*5 cameras - for years.

Oscar,

Unfortunately I don't, I find the 85 f1.4 to be too long on the D2x, and it has been gathering dust in a Lowe Pro bag for quite some time now.

I see what you mean though, I basically purchased the 58 f1.2 to replace the 85 f1.4, and my recollection of the 84 f1.4 makes me feel that their bokeh is very similar indeed.

I have kept the 85 f1.4, as well as other "FF" Nikkors, for my now gone Kodak SLR/n, and in anticipation of a possible future FF Nikon DSLR...

It would be interesting to compare the Nikkor 50/1.2 on the D2X with the much cheaper Canon 85/1.8 on the 5D. The Canon 85/1.8 also has a reputation for good bokeh. I imagine it would be at least as sharp at f1.8 as the Nikkor 50mm is at f1.2, and has the benefit of autofocus.

I think we could probably go up in ISO a stop or so with the 5D without compromising image quality in relation to the D2X .

I own a 5D but not an 85mm prime. I can't make up my mind whether to get the 85/1.2 or 85/1.8 or neither since I already have a TS-E 90/2.8 and I'm not keen on accummulating lenses which I might not use much.

But one thing is certain, if I were to get the 85/1.2, I wouldn't be able to afford to go to Tokyo .
