For making a solid stitch is indeed necessary to have some pano equipment and to know the exact entrance pupil in the lens that has to be the turning point ( viewpoint)

However, the precision needed has to do with the difference in angle from that point to the subject.
In other words ; stitching photographs with subjects very close to the lens need more precision than landscapes at infinity.
You can make very good landscape panorama's handhold.
