Epson P9000 printing blank 44x68 sheet when @ 360dpi, 2.08G
« on: April 15, 2016, 12:10:46 pm »

When I send the file @ 360dpi, file size @ 2.08G, I get a 68" blank sheet. When I reduced it to 300 dpi and got a 1.74G file it prints - all from PS. File's flattened, restarted both computer and printer, and triple checked all my print dialogue. Is this a file size issue?

Yes.
Not sure if their is even a limit but my Mac Pro starts choking once it gets much over 1GB. Depends on your hardware of course.
All of our large canvas is resized to 180 in Perfect Resize then in Lightroom under Print Job, Print Resolution we print at 240 PPI.
Not necessary at all to go above 180 for the size print you are working with.
That keeps the file size down to a manageable number.

I thought PS got rid of the 2G ceiling sometime back - guess not!
As an aside: Is it really necessary to do ALL the verifications just to post a reply?? I'm logged in - is there really a threat?

This may not be a Photoshop issue, more like an OS/ram issue. I have printed 48x96” prints at 360 dpi  frequently from LR, but if I try to send them at 720 dpi things choke and  results are similar to what you are getting.  I think it’s coincidental that reducing to slightly below 2gb works.

The PS 2gb limit is really just a size restriction for .psd files, I think most who has large files have abandoned .psd and just save everything in .tif now.

180 vs 240 vs 360 vs 720 vs ????

Are your modern inkjet printers actually delivering discernible individual colored pixels at these resolutions? For example; a single red pixel sitting in the center of a 1x1 inch gray patch.

I know a properly focused Chromira can do this @ 300 ppi as well as other photographic printers but is PPI being confused with DPI here?

Also, I suspect a “print spooling” issue with the print setup as opposed to RAM. 20 years ago printers made far larger prints with only 1 Gig of RAM and modest computers. It was RIP software that managed the caching of the print spool file on disk to make the large prints possible at the time.

I'm curious to learn what you guys are seeing.
