lens corrections for shift in Capture One
« on: April 03, 2016, 03:27:51 pm »

Apologies if this has been covered recently or is otherwise totally obvious (but not to me)... When using lens corrections for movements in Capture One (I'm currently using v9.0.3), what do positive and negative values correspond to in the x-axis (left-right) and y-axis (rise-fall) fields. In other words, does +12mm of vertical shift correspond to dropping the rear standard 12mm or do I have this exactly backwards? I couldn't find this info online from an admittedly brief search.

My specific case: I'm using an IQ digital back on a Hassy Flexbody. As it turns out, Capture One includes lens corrections for some of the V series lenses, including the 120mm Makro-Planar and 40mm IF CFE, which I tend to favor.

Thanks.

For my Nikons, in landscape mode:
+X = lens shifted left
-X = lens shifted right
+Y = lens shifted up
-Y = lens shifted down

When shooting portrait orientation, these directions rotate w/ the camera, not sure if this is affected by any image rotation settings, etc.

Portrait orientation on L-Plate:
+X = lens shifted down
-X = lens shifted up
+Y = lens shifted left
-Y = lens shifted right

I checked this in C1 by setting a high distortion amount (100%) under lens correction, and watching it move as I change movement settings.

I am curious how well the corrections for shift distortion and vignetting work.

Btw, how long has Capture One had this feature?

I am curious how well the corrections for shift distortion and vignetting work, and are there profiles for at least some of the more commonly used perspective correction lenses, such as the Canons?

Hi David,

Visually it goes a long way in neutralizing the asymmetry in light fall-off, but IMHO it is not all that accurate for the TS-E lenses (for which there is no profile, so only with manual corrections). For real compensation one should use an LCC. Maybe it's better for those (non-TS) lenses that do have a profile.

For distortion, I do not know (no profiles for TS-E lenses).

Don't know, several versions I believe.

Cheers,

Hi David,

As Bart implies, an LCC is imperative for any light falloff issues. It's one of the best tools in the C1 kit. I use it all the time.
