It is difficult to maintain even lighting back to front, I wonder whether parabolics could be feathered to direct more light to the back of the group, as well as being more efficient overall.

This reminds me of the Rob Galbraith article on the Buff umbrellas when they first came out. He used three of the hard silver to light an athletic team, and got very even lighting. Here's the link.
