Shooting tethered to Macbook Pro through Thunderbolt
« on: September 22, 2015, 11:13:44 am »

Has anyone found a solution to the low output power issue of the post 2012 Retina MacBook Pro when shooting MF tethered on location without power to run the generally required powered Thunderbolt to FW800 powered hub? A battery boosted powered hub?

The following Team Phase One backs can be powered by their own battery (by menu option), instead of relying on the underpowered Thunderbolt adapter (or AC power to a powered hub):
- P21, P30, P45
- All P+ backs
- All IQ1 backs
- All IQ2 backs
- All IQ3 backs
- All Credo backs

I have without any issue what so ever used my P45+ and my fiancé's IQ 260 tethered through the thunderbolt adapter relying solely on the computer powering the back.  I have done this repeatably, even without a battery in either back, and have not run into any problems.

I do keep charged batteries on had just in case, but have never needed them.

The only issue I have had with thunderbolt was when I needed to perform a field line calibration.  The program that you need to use does not support thunderbolt and crashes half way through the calibration update.

All you need is a UNIbrain firewire powered hub. I've tried belkin but they don't work.

If you need portability, you need to find a battery to power the Hub. I've tried it with a V battery.
The V battery gives out 15v, I've used it and it is fine.

To clarify. I am using an Hasselblad H3Dll 39ms. I have the Unibrain Pro 800 repeater hub that I use with AC power in the studio. So what I am looking for is a battery pack that can run the repeater hub and successfully provide the required power to the camera & back.
rueyloon what is a "V Battery" ?

This is the same solution as the people with BMPCC is using. The BMPCC takes in 12V, so what people do is to get a sony V mount battery.

Something like this.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/160Wh-Li-ion-Lithium-Battery-Sony-V-mount-Anton-Bauer-D-Tap-DC-Charger-For-DSLR-/251809447589?hash=item3aa1033ea5

There is an output called the D-tap, all you need an an adapter from the D-tap to the unibrain.
like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMCC-Power-Supply-Cable-DC-Plug-5-5mm-to-D-Tap-Connector-60CM-/261642023681?hash=item3ceb147301

this will power the unibrain.

The output is slightly over 12v, about 14-15v, but I believe the specs for Firewire is up to 30V, so the input on the camera should be designed to deal with all that.
