H3D39 vs Leaf aptus 75/75s
« on: March 22, 2014, 11:00:24 am »

Recently i bought a second hand H3D39 to do some interiors and architectural photography.
If initially i decided to go with the hassy it's for the reasons i like the camera and its 28mm.
Few days ago i had the opportunity to try my DB on a view camera equipped with a Rodi 28mm HR. I really liked the image quality and now i think i'd like to go that way.
But as you know it is not very handy using a DB from Hasselblad on a tech camera.
Maybe it's better to keep my camera and find an image bank II or use the silvestri solution to power the DB.
As i really like the leaf's colors and tonality do you have some examples to share with me of architectural or interiors photography shot with an aptus 75 or 75s ?
If you could also send me raw files that's would be great !

Thank you

Are you aware of this document: http://www.hasselbladusa.com/media/1342814/uk_hvc_datasheet.pdf?

Note that if your only problem is to power the H3D-39 back, there is an external battery here: http://www.silvestricamera.com/eng/prodotti_eng/documentation/Li_ion_battery_7010k.pdf. Or, if you have minimal knowledge of electronics, the same can be done at home... the only thing that the back needs is power on the firewire connector.

I already have that document. Maybe i'm wrong but unfortunately the sliding back for the H3D (HVC) has never been released.

I own a Kodak 22mp sensor MS back which is very similar to 39 as far as IQ other than resolution is concerned, I've also tried 22&33mp Dalsa sensor backs from both Sinar and Leaf… For single shot, a Dalsa 33mp back would be my first choice… For use with view & tech cameras, Dalsa 22mp is the most friendly one due to its shallow depth pixels, then its the 33mp Dalsa (same reason), then the 22mp Kodak (because of fat pixels) and last the 39mp Kodak, with all the first three being close for view camera compatibility and clearly better than using 39mp Kodak… I can't sent you any files, but I think you would be better off with the 75S than what you now have, additionally, it's slightly better in higher ISO, has better DR and (as you said) colour/tonality is great, (perhaps the best among all backs)… it seems to be surprisingly moire resistant too.

I didn't know that. What makes it "not very handy" to use your DB on a view camera?

There are a bunch of cheap as nails sliding backs and quad stitch chinese adapters on ebay for Hasselblad H mount backs right now. I guess you still have the problem of powering it, imagebanks are expensive and rare, but, I can't remember the name of it but there are actually some 3rd party solutions for powering h3d backs under $200.

The majority but not all. Some were taken with a Mamiya 7 back in the day. The vast majority of images I take with the Hassie are with a view camera. Previously a Cambo wide DS. Now an Arca Swiss RL 3D.
I find the turbo 3 by far the best power solution for a MF digital back. It out performs anything else. Very reliable and lasts forever. Plus unless you're really working in very remote areas where you will have no access to power for more than 3 days at a time ;and that's with a serious amount of shooting) , than 1 is enough.

Yes the main problem with the hasselblad DB (except the H5D) is to powering it, that's the reason i don't find it very "handy" (is that the good word in English ?  ;) )
However thanks to the Enda's solution it seems to be easier than what i think.

Enda one last question, could you show me an example of one of your picture shot with the H3D39 ?

Thank you !

What's the difference about the H5D?

You can plug a battery to power the camera. I noticed that it works also for the H4D60

The H5D backs have a jack plug to power it with an adapter for Sony camcorder batteries.

Still, all Hasselblad backs can be powered by the firewire plug. The specifications are actually quite easy to met: it needs about 12-15V (it can accept more) on pins 6 and 9 of the firewire connector, unregulated. Basically, all what one needs is a 12 or 15V battery, cut open a firewire cable and hook the battery between the black and the white leads. Suitable batteries are available for model planes and helicopters. Readymade solutions from quantum and silvestri are available, but they do just the same for more money.

Hi Jerome… I guess the adapter and battery would make the backs capable to work with H4X and even older H1 & H2 bodies… no? There is no reason for this not to apply!

Any Hasselblad back will work natively on the H4X. On the H1D, I don't know whether it is a power problem or problem with the communication protocol.
