Frame (border, passe-par-tout) in PS CS3
« on: August 20, 2011, 02:23:54 pm »

Hi
I would like to frame images for printing with a narrow white edge (ca. 0.5 mm) and a somewhat wider black frame, about 1-4 cm.
This can be done by enlarging the canvas in 2 steps, first choosing white as the background color, then black.
However, I would like the black frame to be a little wider bottom than top. Is there a way to achieve this? I could not find it in neither the Photoshop Help, in Real World Photoshop nor Ben Willmore's Photoshop Studio Techniques.
I am on CS 3, Mac 10.6.8.
Thank you for your advice. Hening.

Do it the way you described. The key is to "anchor" your existing image and then add to the black bottom.

I think that CS3 was the same as CS5 for this:
Use Image/Canvas size. On that palate click on the top center space where it says Anchor: That will lock the image to the top center when you change the overall canvas size. Then in the Height box add whatever extra space onto the number that is there. IOW if the canvas is 15" high and you want an extra 1" of black on the bottom, change the number to 16". That will make your canvas 1" higher.
Depending on what you've set your background color to, you might not see black on the bottom but whatever you have selected as your background color. Or if you have only layers so far the background on the bottom may be transparent. Whatever, you can then add a new layer, drag it to the bottom of your layer stack and fill that layer with black. You can then combine the layers that are black to end up with just one black layer with the extra 1" on the bottom.
Hope this helps.
