Panasonic G1 Firmware

Has anyone updated the firmware on a Panasonic G1?  Is it done by using the SD card?  Is it necessary on a G1 purchased in December 09?  

This small format intrigues me, but he GF1 was too funking to use so I have settled on the G1 with, I think, the same sensor chip.

Would welcome any thoughts.
