Nikon D3x and Hot Pixels
« on: November 26, 2009, 05:03:38 pm »

Today i saw my sisters camera - a little Canon- had some hot pixels. I guess you can expect that with inexpensive cameras.

But i was a bit upset that my D3x also had some . It is the first Nikon that i encounter having this problem. ( D2x , D3)
Even at 400 asa I had two and at 1600 asa I had about 10 hotpixels.
The good thing is they can be succesfully removed at a nikon servicepoint if they have the software.

I was wondering if I am the only one having this problem or is it more common?

For what it is worth, never noticed any with mine, but then I didn't look for them either.

Cheers,
Bernard

Every D-SLR has some hot pixels. My understanding is that the manufacturers have their own internal benchmarks for how many is too many before they'll reject a sensor, and that before shipping a camera its hot pixels/dead pixels are mapped out and 'hidden'. For the vast majority of electronic devices, hardware failures occur right up front, so you're unlikely to see many more hot pixels showing up during a camera's lifetime.

You just see them stand out  as white or coloured isolated pixels in a darker surrounding- it is easy.

to find them more easely:
make some photographs of whatever and put in photoshop the black value from 0 to 240
everything will be dark  - except the hot pixels..

Take a long exposure of, for example, the night sky or the inside of your cupboard or even your lens cap. Then look for little coloured dots.

If there are only a few, you can select them and save the selection, then load it into any image where you need to easily find them to clone out.

(In busy scenes they are not nearly as noticeable as in flat colour areas.)
