Problem with Leaf Aptus 54S
« on: July 13, 2009, 06:25:46 pm »

Hey guys,

My Aptus 54s doesn't seem to be syncing well with my 501CM right now and I was wondering if anyone could help me out with any ideas.  All of the cables seem secure and in place and such, but when I fire the shutter, every other time nothing happens.  Occasionally when the back recognizes that a shot is coming in (every other shot without fail) the camera gives the error about therenot being a stable connection.

Has anyone ever seen this with a leaf back?

Any ideas?

You may need to have the synch port on your lens serviced. Does it happen with all of your lenses?

It happens with ever lens (all 4) and interestingly it doesn't have any signal to the back every other time.

Additionally, I believe it to be a firmware issue as when I shoot quickly ever other frame works perfectly.  I am still having problems withy every other frame and when shooting slowly...hmm.

Any ideas?

On a side note, how do I update the Firmware on this back?  Do I need to take it to the dealer?   It seems like the problem is software related.

thanks in advance,

Hi Brandon,

I would check to see that you have the proper camera chosen .  If you are shooting tethered you can do this in the Leaf software.  If you are un-tethered this is done on the back itself.   It would also be useful information to know if the back behaves the same way in both tethered and un-tethered modes.   But I am betting that you simply have to reselect the proper camera in the menu system and all will be fine.

Feel free to contact me if this does not work.

Best regards,
Paul

Ditto on Opstechs recommendation.  I would also doublecheck the cable on the back.  On my CM that was usually the problem.  You really have to press that cable in firmly into the port on the side of the back.

All the best,

You could try changing the camera type on the back to large format instead of Hasselblad 500 series. I found this sorted out a number of misfiring issues when I had a Blad and Aptus 17. The syncs on some of my C lenses were a bit dodgy which didn't help things. However, two of my lenses were absolutely fine and I never had any misfiring when selecting Large format on the back. As I recall, when I locked the mirror up and had Hasselblad 500 series selected on the back I had no end of problems. Worth a go anyway, and for what it's worth when shooting untethered the firmware version I was using made no difference whatsoever! Craig

Paul, Tom, Tgrain, John, and Craig,

Thanks for your input and help.  I ended up changing the back to large format and all has been well since then.  When it is set to hasselblad 500 it does not work though.  I am going to try upgrading the firmware and seeing if that changes it.  Either way, I hope this helps out others if they have any problems in the future.

My firmware version is 4.7 FYI.

thanks guys!

Glad, you're working! FWIW I never had much of a success ratio when it was set to Hasselblad 500 either but once it was changed to large format it worked flawlessly. I recall issues with mirror lockup and cable releases being a pain - once it was on Large Format though all was good. Cheers, Craig
