gitzo tripods

has anyone used the gitzo series 0 tripods?  if so, have you used this with or without a particular head?  any thoughts or recommendations?  i'm using a high end dslr with maximum 100mm lens, nothing too heavy.  thanks.

If you want my advice, get series 3 or 2 and never look back, i don't know which series 0 is available now, but i have 3 Gitzo tripods, series 1 & 2 & 5, if i don't travel then i will say that series 5 is TOP perfect, series 3 can be between series 5 & 3, and as you said you have high end DSLR then you should get something sturdy and good enough for you to be in safe side, in the future you may get something more and then you will go to buy another tripod, why wasting money twice then.

Personally I wouldn't go lighter than the 100 series but only if space was an issue. I'm currently selling the Total Luxe 106 that I've used off and on for over 20 years when I needed something that folded up to only thirteen inches. The 0 series does make a good table top tripod.

I use an older Gitzo that is more or less the equivalent of the current 0530, with the smallest RRS head (BH-25).  I also use an RRS MPR rail to help keep the weight centered.  The entire setup weighs just a bit over 2.25 pounds.  The heaviest gear I use is a Canon 40D with 70-300 f/4.5-6.3.  I bought such a setup because I wanted it for backpacking, where I may have 30 pounds of other stuff on my back to begin with.  Considering these constraints, I'm delighted with it.  It's quite solid as long as it's on a solid surface and the center column is not raised.  The low maximum height is the worst problem.  But given my requirements, what I have is as close to ideal as I could find.  Now, after having said how much I like it, would I have chosen it if weight weren't such an important concern?  No, I would have gone up a size - even for hiking, a series 2 is not so big and heavy if you're not carrying camping gear.
