canon adapter for large format camera

Hi

I'm womdering if anyone has ever used something like this:

What results did you have? Are there any prolems with shadows on the sensor from the camera (canon) housing caused by the sensor being recessed?

If anyone knows of anything similar, I'd be grateful for any links.

I've been looking at ways to get more resolution out of my camera (digital rebel)without spending too much money. I'm shooting flat artwork, and this seemed like a good way of stitching without any of the lens disortion that normally occurs.

Would a shiftable lens (say Canon's TS-E series) have the same effect with an APS sensor, I guess I would have to fix the lens and shift the camera but does it seem possible? Does anyone know of an adapter that would fit between camera and body for a digital Rebel, that would enable me take multiple images through the same lens?

I built mine for quite a lot less :-)

There are problems with clearance between the lens rear element and the adapter with some shorter (75mm or less) lenses. By suitable care in design of the adapter plate you can reduce the shading effectively to slightly more than that of the EF lens mount itself. You can get a rough idea of this by flipping up the mirror with no lens mounted, and looking at the sensor from different angles

I've been playing around with the view camera a bit, but it's recently been supplanted in the 'new toy' category by a 1Ds3. I'll have a go with fitting the 1Ds3 to it before long and see how much 21MP 'shows up' my current limited collection of LF lenses :-)  I could really do with a high quality lens to test it out, but the expense of a 1Ds3 and 14mm 2.8L II lens have somewhat depleted the "buying expensive glass on a whim" funds... ;-)

I do this quite often with the 90 TSE and a 1ds, I get a 22 Mpx file, with an equivalent sensor size of 36x48mm. If you are shooting flat art you can shift the lens and the image will stitch perfectly.  For 3D things you would have to shift the camera and keep the lens still ... which is just not practical without some contraption to hold the weight of the camera while the lens is somehow fixed to the tripod.

Which leads me to wonder why the ts/e lenses don't have a mount for a tripod collar.

The engineering to support the weight of a camera would make the shift mechanism extremely solid.

If you've got one, attach a TS lens to something heavy like a 1Ds and try holding it by the lens while altering vertical movement ... not something I'd try with one of mine BTW ;-)

There are various tripod adaptors that allow for precision shifting of the camera - just a bit of hassle to set up and use in a hurry.

Such a heavy duty version would have a very limited market for what is a specialised lens anyway - I once heard that Canon sold so few it was a bit of a loss leader. However they seem much more popular now, even to the extent that I've heard of rumours about an all new TS-E next year (which would be nice :-)

I use this adapter to backup my MF on a P2, if necessary.

No problems, the adapter is extemly simple, the camera rotates about the adapter to H/V shoots, the unique problem is in the extreme lateral movement, a very litle shadow from the mount, and for glass under 210 mm, is necessary the rejected mount in the lens.
