OK, I’m going out on a limb here by posting this, but I would be fascinated to hear if others have experienced similar phenomena.

When I close my eyes at night before falling asleep I sometimes see a small bright area containing images, both still and action, often featuring people, faces and locations that are in no way related to my personal experiences or knowledge or any third party content that I have ever viewed. The experience can be vivid and surreal.

The little research I’ve done seems to point to Phosphenes or closed-eye hallucinations (also called hypnagogic imagery). In no way does this disturb or worry me, quite the contrary, I find it fascinating, entertaining even. I’ve experienced this for many years. Apparently, the occurrence is not uncommon. I have to wonder if it is more common in visual creatives?

Ooh er, missus! Am I alone here?

I've never experienced meaningful images as you but have "seen" patterns of light, especially if I've rubbed my eyes too vigorously. I never knew they had a name.

Nope, never experienced those sorts of things, but what does surprise me is that my dreams are often populated by people I am sure I have never met. Where do they come from, uninvited like that? Sometimes, after I’ve had to get up to go pee, my dreams resume where they left off.

I’m also fairly sure that I have been aware of my dreams being in colour and yet sometimes in black/white.

Again, season’s best to you and V.

Robert, I also see the patterns of light which I understand are very common.

Rob, I believe the visions of unrelated people can also be a form of closed-eye hallucination, but I'm no physician or psychiatrist.

Happy New Year to you both.

And to you.

In the last dream for which I can remember any content, I was in an episode of the Rockford Files. The actors played their usual characters but I appeared as myself. I remember nothing else.

I have seen ghost images sometimes but I think those are residual images on my retina of something I saw just before closing my eyes. But that's a different effect.

One worrying thing that sometimes happens in my dreams is that I am on a gig and don‘t use my photographic equipment properly. I can’t say this comes from any real experience that I have had, but think it probably is a twisted representation of being out of the business for so long, and feeling redundant. I suppose all old people must have these sorts of emotions stored away somewhere, just waiting for the opportunity to burst out and hurt. Another one is where against all common sense, I leave the camera case unattended somewhere, and of course, never see it again.

Another dream that frequently makes its appearance concerns the car: I park it in some strange place and it’s not there when I go back for it. I am never able to decide if the place is the right place or not, or whether the car has been stolen, instead. Also, I’m usually driving one of my cars from long ago - often the little Fiat X1/9 that I had for a short while. Lanzarote also plays a rôle: I dream that I’m driving along a high ridge beside the sea, and simply turn off right and into space. So far, I never have reached the ocean. I’d rather not. Associated with that sea dream, is the one where I am driving in surf, hopping the car from one handy boulder to another - always in a black car. These car dreams have been around for decades.

I have repeated heavy dreams/nightmares about my time in advertising as an illustrator, not at all a happy time.

Thankfully not had any photographic related horrors. Must say something?

...often the little Fiat X1/9 that I had for a short while...

I am so jealous. I had a 1974 128 4-door that gave me many problems so that I used to lust after the X1/9s in the showroom while I waited for service. Years later I bought a 1986 MR2 as substitute. It was a very good car but never tugged at the heart like the X1/9.

I suspect many people have disaster dreams. I was still having examination disaster dreams in my 60s.
