Imageprint RED-are people using it and how do they like it?
« on: December 19, 2025, 07:47:42 pm »

I've been printing for years, going back to an Epson 1270. I'm currently using an Epson P900 and have been quite happy with my prints from Photoshop. I print every week, a few prints, mostly color and some monochrome using QTR RIP.

I've read about Imageprint. I'm strictly and amateur and not a candidate for Black as I use only a few papers and cannot justify the cost.

I'm curious about folks that use RED in a non-production environment. Are there realistic improvements over the standard Epson driver? I'm planning to download the demo and play with it a bit but respect the folks on this forum for honest advice.

I considered ImagePrint RED a few months ago, so I am going to share my own impressions, provided that they are just based on my limited experience during the trial period.

To cut to the chase, personally I feel that Black is the version where IP really shines. In addition to it being a true RIP with its own printer driver, just the fact that it gives users access to a broad portfolio of custom ICC profiles is an outstanding resource. However, to your point, it comes with a pretty hefty price tag.

As to RED, my first observation is that the security feature that IP relies on during the trial period is extremely invasive as they let you try the software but you get a repetitive pattern of watermarks all over any image that you print. This really gets in the way of properly assessing the end result. Having said that, RED appeared to be a capable printing software with many options for customizing the print layout. The GUI takes time to get used to - there definitely is a learning curve there. The output looked very good (as far as I could tell given the multitude of watermarks) - I had the impression that IP RED prints were just a touch brighter than those printed through say EPL, Qimage One or Mirage.

Having said all that, I eventually went for Mirage as in my view it comes with a clearer GUI and workflow, it has similar features to IP RED’s and it produces really good prints with excellent colors at a fraction of IP RED’s price. Mirage also comes with a standard trial period during which the software is fully functional, which makes it much easier for the user to properly test it. And finally Mirage’s customer support has been excellent, very responsive and very helpful.

Hope some of this is of help to you.

I would like to know the same thing. I was an image print black user back when I was running an epson 9800 but use qImage with my P9000. Would love to run some side by side tests but it's difficult to make a clear assessment with the watermarks in the way. Would be nice if colorbyte offered a few watermark-less prints out of the demo version so prints could be compared "blind" side by side in a light booth.

With the oem profiles as good as they are and being able to make my own if I want to I don't see the value in Black.
I have a Graphtec cutter and do have an interest in "Cut It Out"
The pricing is right at $295 until you find out you must purchase the $595 Red version to make it work.
That $595 added to the $295 and you have a 900 dollar bill just to be able to cut out snap shot prints once a month.
Just no return on investment at that price. Maybe something close to half that and I might be in.

Can you tell me more about the Graphtec cutter you're using? Can it cut 300gsm photo paper? Can it cut rounded edges to make playing cards?

I have the Graphtec C2-7000 the 24" model.  Image print using "Cut It Out" did a video a year or so ago showing it cutting out photos on a gang sheet with Kevin Raber.
Rounded corners and any shape of sticker or decal. Photo paper and vinyl are easy. Not sure of the thickness specs.
I did the three logos in the center column. Machine cost was $1750 but believe it is a little higher now.
