Hi,

I printed on sheet of an uncoated paper with my Canon IPF 6400, and a head strike happened (on a surface of 1x4cm).

After that problem, I printed a nozzle check that was perfect. Two hours later, I wanted to check the paper configuration (the head height). I pressed the Menu button and the printer immediately displayed it was removing the ink from the head and ask for a head change by positioning the carriage.

I wonder if this head change detection could be due to the check itself (the head strike could have moved pieces of paper on a "sensor" ?) or if the head is really damaged since the nozzle check is perfect.

I switched off the printer and switched it on in service mode when I did a Head Cleaning A. After the nozzle check is ok. I clearer the error list. But I still get a warning light blinking and it does not print anything (while still in service mode).

Anybody knows how I can keep on using that head ? A Canon head is about 400 euros and I wonder if I will keep this printer regarding that cost.

Thanks.

Philippe

Thank your lucky stars. $400 well within the cost of doing business with a 64" printer.
Both of the heads went out on my 64" solvent s80600 and it cost me $5100.

definitely worth keeping--  I run 9400s still to this day and all the "upgrades" i've used have been worse in one way or another.  Also you can get very cheap ink, and you're not finding a new 24" printer for anywhere near 400 euros...

I like the iPF6400 very much but it is the second time I get a sudden request for changing the head without any warning. I guess this is probably due to my usage (quite a number of uncoated papers).
However, my lucky stars protected me this time. A head cleaning A and error message reset in service mode, as described above, make the problem disappear and the nozzle check is still ok. Let's see how long it will last.

I'm close to starting a new thread as a kind of "master thread" about this generation of printers, because there's a lot of info I've gleaned over my 10+ years working with them.  I've got two 9400s now, both with over 100,000 sq/ft on them (one of those was entirely by me, the other I bought for cheap with already 160K on it, but it's MUCH cleaner than my original unit-- whoever was running it must have run one paper, consistently long runs unattended).

I've noticed recently I've been having some false head replacement errors that I'm pretty sure I've narrowed down to poor electrical contact with the heads.  I (just last night and this morning) took all 4 heads out of my two printers in service mode using the CR_UNLOCK and cleaned both the nozzle plates with some ink owl printhead flush, and cleaned the contacts on the back with first a white eraser and then some contact cleaner on a piece of cloth.  I also used the eraser on the contacts on the inside of the head carriage--  swiping downward as all of the pins face in that direction to avoid bending them.  This seems to stop it from randomly throwing head errors in a lot of cases.

The reason why I cleaned the nozzle plates is that I noticed that on both my machines the blue ink was acting strangely in head alignment checks, the center lines on a bidirectional calibration showed up doubled like they weren't jetting properly, but after cleaning manually it's much better.  There must be thicker pigment in that ink, like on epsons with their orange.

It's also worth cleaning the wiper blades when you have the carriage unlocked, because they will get gunked up and then not be able to clean well anymore.

Look up the service manual for the ipf8300, there's a really fascinating section (Chapter 2) where they actually go into "theory of operation" basically explaining every element of how the printers work from a technical level from data input to nozzle output-- much like the way electronics service manuals were back in the 1970s.

Are you sure that you get rid of doubled lines after cleaning the contacts? When I had iPF8300 it was a sign for me that the head went south. By the time PF-05 failed they also tended to ocasionally fry the main PCB

i fixed the lines by cleaning the nozzle plates with printhead flush-- this particular head was a little less than two months old, but the blue was caked up on the surface.  It is possible that the blue ink should be replaced because it's starting to clump up, the one place I haven't really been in these printers is inside the sub-tanks to see how difficult it would be to completely flush it out...
