iPhone 18 Pro
« on: September 10, 2026, 04:06:07 pm »

Pre-release rumours suggested a different tele lens. One post-release report that I read today stated that that wasn’t the case: only one lens has been altered to allow diaphragm changing.

The other thing that stood out for me about the new 18 version is that the multi-function exposing button/slider? has apparently gone, replaced by a single-function contact. Why anyone at iPhone imagined a photographer needed a complicated moment at his critical moment beggers belief. Some camera companies get crucified for being engineer biased and not as concerned with photographer requirements; it seems to be the general drift these days. Think cars: you need a fingerprint to engage with your car, you need the damned car to read the road for you and scream at you if you cross lanes? From my perspective, it looks like manufacturers have realised that instead of adding expensive chrome, they can add totally unnecessary functions simply to create buyer-perceived need, and milk the purchaser by over-complicating cars, cameras or even cellphones. Hell’s teeth, your camera needs few basics: a shutter, a sensor, a lens and a firing button. The rest of making a shot is supposed to be your photographic skill.

There doesn't seem to be anything worth upgrading my iPhone 17 Pro Max... I generally do that every second generation anyway. Variable aperture? On a tiny sensor? Would like to see if there is any perceptible difference in depth-of-field.

Slobodan, the link to your website doesn’t work for me. Something about being a new network (Cloudfare) and incompatible…?

Rob,
The changes you refer to are not germane to the 18 - they’re  a consequence of the OS upgrades and the revised camera app. Not sure when they were introduced but I’m running it on a 16 pro. All configurable within

Settings > Camera > Camera Control > Camera Adjustments > Customise

The September Apple event is the first time, IIRC, that the iPhone was introduced first, usually it’s last.
A sure sign that it was (and is) but an iterative upgrade.

That's interesting, and makes it seem that Apple is just trying to retain market share (and manage the excitement of an expected new-product time slot) without producing anything really better.

Thanks for the info. - it could make old (but new) 17 Pro model offers interesting from a 13 Mini owner's point of view.

Yes, Rob, sorry about that… I closed my website that was hosted by Zenfolio… no one was visiting it anyway… and I didn’t refresh it after I left the States in 2019.

maybe the idea is you can now use f/1.4 with some less quality and for video f4 could be nice reducing the light so you have longer shutterspeeds?

but from DOF point of view ?  maybe macro?

F/stop selection is limitied to only one lens, 24mm equivalent. And it is not like you can go to, say, f/22... just f/4

Even there, diffraction might become a problem worse than any advantage of perceived increase in depth of field.

It could be a psychological diaphragm, where you elect to change aperture, but nothing actually happens, and with so much dof already there, you only fool yourself… okay, Apple, that’s a cynical joke! Reading various reviews, it would appear that other marques have already gone the adjustable apertures route, only to drop it a short while later. How much micro complexity does anybody need?
