Impossible Bokeh.

I found an image which while shot with the inexpensive Canon 50 1.8 lens...has reasonable bokeh.. nothing like the pentagon  shaped stuff Id have expected to see. Could Lightroom have been "fooled" into incorrectly profiling the lens

Any ideas how this could be possible?

these days, it seems that almost anything is possible..

maybe the omichrons did it..or the omichromes

Good guess...

there's probably a range..of f-stops..within which  the aperture negates the possibility of the repellent pentagon shaped bokeh.

That sounds plausible. It may vary with different lenses. I plan to run some tests on my own gear to see what happens.
