Defining new paper types on Canon PRO-2000
« on: June 05, 2017, 02:52:02 am »

Hi,

I have the Canon PRO-2000, and I print from LR with Print Studio Pro. I have bought the MOAB Juniper Rag, and try to define it via the Media Configuration tool.
I set up a new custom paper called MOAB, connect the ICC profile, and update the profiles to the printer. But, when I open PrintStudioPro the new paper type is not visible, neither is the ICC profile for MOAB.
I had to skip the step that sets up the media information, because the .am1x file provided by MOAB is not recognized.
I really don't understand why this does not work, I have previously set up a profile for Canson Baryta.

Any ideas?

After creating the new Media Type did you remember to "Update Media Information" (a formal process described in the MCT manual)? Forgetting this step is easy to happen and one reason why a newly created Media Type would not show up.

But I would ask a broader question: why are you using Print Studio Pro to print from Lightroom?

Yes, I did, that is why I am surprised that it does not show up.
I am not very experienced with printing, learning as I go, my thinking was that the Canon SW should be good at least for printing on Canon sheets and rolls, but I can of course print from LR/PP. Should I?

That is surprising; looking it over, it strikes me (again) that the manual isn't exactly a masterpiece of logic and clarity; perhaps best phone Canon tech support and let them take you through the process step-by-step; you'll probably find out there is some little something missing in what you did.

Printing directly through LR is very straightforward and works extremely well, provided you enter the correct settings in the Print module and the printer driver you access through it. Here again though, the Media Type and profile you associated with it should appear in order to print correctly. Unless you are trying to create a profiling target, or to access the B&W print pipeline in the printer driver, I can't think of any particular reason to add this layer of software to the printing process if you are working in LR.

If I remember correctly, on the Pro-1000 the media configuration tool sends the data to the printer, but you have to update the driver data from the printer after that, to be able to see the new media in the print driver.

Yes, I think that's essentially what I suggested in reply #1.

Yes, I finally found out via Canon in Norway: The Canon Media configuration tool pushes the information about the newly defined paper to the printer (I actually found the ICC for MOAB on the printer itself), but for the new paper to be visible in the printing dialogue on the Mac, the system info has to collect that info back from the printer (!).

So, I had to go to System Preferences/Printers & scanners in the Apple menu of the Mac, choose the Canon Pro-2000/Options and Supplies/Utility, then open Printer Utility, Choose Media Information from the drop-down, then click OK in the panel, then wait for the system to be updated, then restart the program you are printing from.

Voila - the new paper type is visible, and can be selected in the print dialogue.

Logical? Well....

It's very logical in the minds of the people who designed the algorithms, but that doesn't mean it makes sense to the customers. So in my books, it's either poor design or a poor instruction set, or both that this thread even had to exist in the first place; things like this should be straightforward in one seamless operation from one set of dialogs and properly explained. Anyhow, glad you got it all sorted out now.

The crucial step here is that, AFTER you have defined the new paper in MCT and updated the printer, if you want it to be visible in the Mac's printer dialogue (and in Canon's own Print Studio Pro), you have to go the system menu on the Mac itself to get the information FROM the printer. I cannot find any reference to this in the manual for MCT for Mac: http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/7/0300024277/01/MediaConfigurationTool_V1.1_Mac_EN_V01.pdf

You probably hinted to that in your first response, what I did not understand was that this had to be done in the Mac System menu (I had updated the Media Information in MCT several times). Thanks anyway.

Well, I wasn't sure it has to be done from the Mac System Preferences>Printers> etc. If you look at the bottom of page 22 of the MCT manual where it refers you to the printer manual and then page 513 of the Pro-2000 manual (PDF), it would seem that as long as the information is both in the printer and in the printer driver (done using the page 513 instructions) it should be good to go. Am I understanding correctly that you tried that and it wasn't sufficient?

I guess this is the menu that I finally found, I just did not know it was not part of MCT, but the Print part of System Preferences on the Mac.

OK, yes, to close the loop on this we are talking about the same thing - it is the printer driver one is updating with the information from the printer, but the process is accessed as you say, from Preferences>Printers and Scanners> Canon Prox000, then selecting the Media Information and click Update from there. If you have your printing application open, you then need to close it and reopen it.

One more thing: The Canon IJ Printer software must be used to install the Printer for the Utilities to be visible - if the "Utilities" button is not visible, then the printer is installed using Apple software/Bonjour (see Kind when installing). Then delete the printer and re-install it with the IJ software (printer must be on and connected).
