SD Card fails to mount

I have an SD card full of a day's shoot.

When I turn the camera on the card is not recognized.

Neither will it mount on a computer or another similar camera.

The thing worked perfectly until the end of the day. I believe it is full.

Any suggestions?

Hi Chris,

Sorry to hear this mishap. The thin plastic separators between the contacts are very fragile, sometimes they break and move so they interfere with a contact. Carefully moving the plastic separator back in position with a plastic tool will help and after recovery discard the card.

Final solution is a datarecovery service, costly but if there are Lula videofiles on the card I am sure the community here will approve

Many thanks for the suggestion.

I have closely inspected the card and compared it under magnification to a 'good' one - mechanically they appear identical.

The contacts have also been carefully cleaned - no joy.

This happened within the GH2 between powering it off and subsequently powering it on again without having moved the card.

I just lost a full cf card the same way, and i never got the files.  I was able to re-shoot so I opted out of a data recovery service.

What I was able to glean from the net is that it might be the cards internal controller that died.

This was a first for me after many years of shooting digital.  The card was a Trancend BTW, which they are replacing.

I am afraid it is very likely to be a fried controller on the card.

The only option then to retrieve the files is a data recovery service.

Sorry to hear this.

Had a similr issue with a Transcent 16GB SD card last year. Unfortunately I couldn't find any affordable solution.

Many thanks for the replies! My last resort when I get home next weekend is to put it in the freezer and then see if PhotoRescue will see it on an older card reader.

- if not then the thing will be officially muerto just like all the effigies that were blown up with great firecracker explosions much to the delight of the crowds here in San Miguel this Easter Day.

If its a Trancend it has a lifetime warranty.  They will send you a new one if you want it.

Thanks for the unintentional giggle; was it an old card?

Reading the title of this thread made me wonder about the relationship between cards and people: do they suffer the same inconvenient failures as we do as we age? That's one of the nice things about a loooong marriage: you can both laugh at events which in shorter relationships would cause intense anxiety and not a little embarrassment!

While I haven’t tried it with a SD card, I’ve used the program called Nucleus Kernel for FAT and NTFS to recover data from about 16 drives in the last couple of years. It has yet to fail me.
