Colors are bad using Canon Pro9500 MII and MOAB Slickrock Metallic Pearl paper

After reading glowing reviews about the MOAB Slickrock Metallic Pearl paper on this forum and DP Review I purchased a 50 pack of 11x8.5 inch paper to use on my new Canon Pixma Pro9500 Mark II printer.

I downloaded and installed the ICC profiles for my printer from the paper manufacturers website and color calibrated my HP ZR24W LCD (ISP) monitor using a ColorVision Spyder2Express.

When I printed using Lightroom 3.3 64-bit (running on Windows 7 Professional 64-bit) the print colors are over saturated to the point that skin tones are dark orange. I'm new to making my own printis and need some guidence.

My Lightroom setup was as follows:
Adobe Lightroom 3.3 Print Module - Page Setup
Printer = Canon Pro9500 II series
Media Type = Photo Paper Pro Platinum
Print Quality = High
Color/Intensity = Auto
Effects (All Set to Off)

Adobe Lightroom 3.3 Print Module - Print Job
Draft Mode printing = OFF
Print Resolution = 300
Print Sharpening = Medium
Media Type = Glossy
Profile = MOAN Slickrock Metallic Pearl Canon 9500II PPP.icc
Rendering Intent = Relative

I tried to print again and set the Print Job Color Management Profile to "Managed by Printer" and the resulst were much better, but I'm still confused as to why the manufacturers ICC profile didn't produce better results.

What have I done wrong with this setup?

Are those the settings recommended with the profile?

It says only the following on the MOAB ICC profile download page which I followed.
Media Type: Premium Photo Paper Platinum **Please use Relative rendering intent for best results**

I guess the only thing I'm not sure about that is the color/intensity setting at Auto.  Obviously you don't want the printer driver doing anything to the color/intensity... all printer color management must be turned off.  Does auto "disable" it, or is there another option which effectively turns it off?

It color/intensity setting is either Auto or Manual.  Choosing Manual then allows you to select from a few predefined color profiles (I don't recall the names) or use sliders to adjust various color values.  I think I'll set the Color/Intensity to Manual and see what that does.
